AN EVENING OF FILM, VIDEO, AND SOUND WITH TONY CONRAD
Tight Bros Network, Frequent Small Meals, and Table of the Elements are
proud to present a unique screening and performance by the legendary
Tony Conrad, Sunday, March 19, 2006 at Eyedrum. Mr. Conrad informs us
that his presentation will be part performance, part screening and will
contain not only newly unearthed archival material from the past 30
years, but also recent work ("some amusing, some serious"). Some of his
classic 'flicker film' work may make an appearance as well, in wonderful
16mm. As Tony says, it is unusual to be able to present both his music
and film and video work together, so this should be a unique evening.
Tony Conrad is a legendary figure in the art world since the early
1960s, well-known in a number of disciplines. As a musician, he
co-founded the Theater of Eternal Music with John Cale, La Monte Young,
and Marian Zazeela, and was present at the formation of the Velvet
Underground. He was roommates with the great underground filmmaker Jack
Smith, and composed the soundtrack to Smith's magnum opus "Flaming
Creatures." Later, Conrad made one of the first and best-known "flicker"
films ("The Flicker," 1965), which used black and white frames
alternating in patterns to produce hallucinatory effects. In the 1970s,
Conrad gave expanded cinema performances and collaborated with many
other artists, including the German rock band Faust. In the 1990s,
Conrad's music gained renewed attention with the release of several CDs
on the Table of the Elements label. In addition, Conrad dug into his
vast archive of private recordings for two fascinating CDs of
performances by Jack Smith. He currently teaches in the Department of
Media Study at S.U.N.Y. Buffalo, performs internationally, and is
featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial.

Los Angeles, California: Filmforum

7:00 pm, Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd.

FOLLOW ME TO CERTAIN DEATH: AN EVENING WITH VANESSA RENWICK
Films by Vanessa Renwick and others. In the personal documentary work of
Portland-based Vanessa Renwick, edgy and grim poetry informs a steady,
deliberate stare at extreme states of existence. Humans and other
animals take decisive action. Everything is a matter of life and death.

3/19
San Francisco, California: San Francisco Cinematheque
http://www.sfcinematheque.org
7:30, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 701 Mission St

 STATES OF UNBELONGING
Former Bay Area artist Lynne Sachs comes to Cinematheque to screen her
newest cine-essay States of Unbelonging, made in collaboration with her
Israeli friend and former student Nir Zats. Intrigued by the life of a
young Israeli filmmaker, Revital Ohayon, who was murdered with her two
children, Sachs begins a digital correspondence with Zats as a means of
exploring the meanings and aftermath of this violent act. Approaching
the Middle East conflict through this singular event, the film's layered
and multiple images and sounds—of Israel and Brooklyn, of private and
public spaces—weave their sensitive and increasingly complex tale
through dialogue with Zats and others.

3/19
Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Pleasure Dome
http://www.pdome.org/
3 pm, 491 College St.

STAR SPANGLED TO DEATH BY KEN JACOBS
The calendar returns once again to the 19th of March, this time marking
the third anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq. Desiring to reflect on
this travesty in our own way, Pleasure Dome presents the Toronto
premiere of Ken Jacobs's epic film (presented on DVD), Star Spangled to
Death (6 hours, 42 min.). Begun in 1957, Star Spangled to Death has been
Jacobs's long-running project to encapsulate the more bestial side of
American Manifest Destiny. Initially filming with his friend and
collaborator, Jack Smith, cavorting around the Lower East Side as the
bohemian "Spirit Not of Life but of Living," Jacobs has grafted on more
and more layers over the course of the last half-century. Please note:
the screening will be presented with three intermissions.

 QUANTUM LEAPS
Guest Curator Astria Suparak Quantum leap, a physics term deriving from
the mid 1900s indicating significant and swift advances (originally via
a sudden shift in energy within an atom), became the title of an early
1990s American television series featuring a time travelling,
body-swapping, do-gooder scientist. In 2005 this inspirational screening
of new video follows suit, cataloguing heroes, compressing history, and
hallucinating futures. Works by Daniel Barrow, Philippe Blanchard,
Daniel Cockburn, Dearraindrop, Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby, Jim
Finn, Caroline Koebel, J. Macdonell, Marriage, Jim Munroe, Liz
Rosenfeld, Seth Price, and Andy Puls.

 QUANTUM LEAPS WITH ASTRIA SUPARAK!
QUANTUM LEAPS catalogues heroes, compresses history, and hallucinates
futures. We are in a hyperdated time populated by minor celebrity
comebacks and movie remakes, soundtracked by mash-ups and remixes, and
backdropped by vintage/old school/retro simulacra. Artists now are as
inspired by history they weren't quite conscious for as by their lived
experiences. Here it is possible to amalgamate eras, to break out of
social and gender constraints, and to cobble together a fantasy lineage.
Many of the artists bypass ineffectual adoration for social edification.

"MONSTER ROAD" EXPERIMENTAL ANIMATION DOCUMENTARY SCREENING AND
 EXPERIMENTAL WORK BY ED SEEMAN
Moviate Presents: "Monster Road" Wednesday March 22nd, 8pm A special
screening of "MONSTER ROAD" a documentary about Bruce Bickford, animator
from Oregon will be projected at the Mantis Collective Gallery. plus 12
minutes of short films (some collaborations with Frank Zappa) by Ed
Seeman, filmmaker from Florida. "Monster Road explores the wildly
fantastic worlds of legendary underground clay animator Bruce Bickford.
Tracing the origins of his remarkably unique sensibility, the film
journeys back to Bickford's childhood in a competitive household during
the paranoia of the Cold War and examines his relationship with his
father, George, who is facing the onset of Alzheimer's Disease.
Bickford's films, especially the dark and magical clay animations he
created for Frank Zappa in the 1970s, have achieved cult status
worldwide. Entirely self-taught, the 56-year-old Bickford works alone in
a makeshift basement studio in his house near Seattle. Bickford's father
George, a retired Boeing engineer of the Cold War era, is the other main
character. George's talent for maximizing the space inside airplanes and
missiles parallels his son's animations, which often contain dozens of
inch-tall figures fighting battles on a tiny set. George's wondrous
musings about the universe reveal a deep admiration for the implicit
architect of such splendor while atheism prevents him from admitting the
possibility of a God. Along with the wonder of creation, George
considers the pain of a life spent disengaged from his family and
centered on the imperfections in those around him." Q&A with "Monster
Road" director Brett Ingram via Speaker phone after film. Moviate at the

THE FREE SCREEN - DAVID GATTEN IN PERSON!
Cinematheque Ontario presents THE FREE SCREEN (formerly The
Independents). The Free Screen is your window on the vast and rewarding,
but often overlooked, world of unconventional, non-commercial cinema -
those films and videos made by committed artists working outside of
mainstream channels of production and distribution. These artists prefer
to work free from the restrictive aesthetic conventions and commercial
concerns of the movie business, a position which allows them to explore
the possibilities of the art of cinema to the fullest. The Free Screen
presents work by artists engaged in fields ranging from avant-garde film
and animation to hybrid documentaries, essay films and video art, often
with the artists in attendance to present their work. - Chris Gehman,
Free Screen programmer. DAVID GATTEN IN PERSON! In just under a decade,
David Gatten has emerged as one of the most important avant-garde
filmmakers of his generation. His major current work is a nine-part
series of films that considers the lives of William Byrd and his
daughter Evelyn Byrd, important figures in early eighteenth-century
Virginia; this programme comprises the four Byrd films completed to
date. Gatten's films ring the lives of the Byrds like a bell, with each
successive peal finding new resonances. The series is deeply engaged in
an inquiry into different systems of thought and representation, and the
binary categories into which discourse channels experience of the world.
Taking as their starting point a continuing exploration of the
relationship between film and the book, Gatten's films map the gaps and
scars between public and private, male and female, reading and writing,
free flight and confinement. The cinema has seldom offered us work which
is so rewarding as narrative, biography, and philosophy – poetic form
and material exploration at once. David Gatten's films have been
exhibited worldwide, at festivals from Korea to Athens, and at museums
and cinematheques including the Whitney Museum, La Cinémathèque
française, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2005, he was awarded a
Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship to continue his work on the Byrd films.
Films in this series, directed by David Gatten, include: SECRET HISTORY
OF THE DIVIDING LINE (USA) 1996-2002, 20 minutes, silent, b&w, 16mm; THE
  GREAT ART OF KNOWING (USA) 2004, 37 minutes, silent, b&w, 16mm; MOXON'S
MECHANICK EXERCISES, OR, THE DOCTRINE OF HANDY-WORKS APPLIED TO THE ART
OF PRINTING (USA) 1999, 26 minutes, silent, b&w, 16mm; THE ENJOYMENT OF
  READING, LOST & FOUND (USA) 2001, 16 minutes, silent, color/b&w, 16mm.
All screenings in this series are FREE, non-ticketed events. Programming
suggestions and submissions are welcome. All Cinematheque Ontario
screenings are held at the Art Gallery of Ontario's Jackman Hall, 317
Dundas St. West, Toronto (McCaul Street entrance). All screenings are
restricted to individuals 18 years of age or older. For more
information, visit the Official website, www.bell.ca/cinematheque, the
year-round Box Office at Manulife Centre (55 Bloor Street West, main
floor, north entrance), or call 416-968-FILM.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida: One Take Super 8 Event
11 pm, Cinema Paradiso 503 South East 6th St.

ONE TAKE SUPER 8 EVENT : SOUTH FLORIDA EDITION
For the 1st time in South Florida, and after 5 successful years in
Saskatchewan, the original ONE TAKE SUPER 8 EVENT promises to be a
diverse showcase of Canadian and American super 8 films. Over 30
independent filmmakers from Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, South Florida
and beyond will load their cameras to take part in this year's
spectacle. On Friday March 24th, 2006, 30 films will be premiered in
South Florida at Cinema Paradiso at 11pm. These 3-minute masterpieces
will truly display the diversity and creativity of different independent
film communities across Canada and the United States. The ONE TAKE SUPER
8 EVENT is a distinct film screening, in that none of the films will be
viewed before they are screened on the evening of March 24th. The
filmmakers are not allowed to edit or screen their films prior to the
screening. What they shoot in camera is what is shown. No Cuts. No
Splices. No Changes. One Take, One Night. This leads to some exciting
and refreshing films, and a rare opportunity for public viewing. The ONE
TAKE SUPER 8 EVENT was established in 2000 by Saskatchewan filmmaker
Alex Rogalski as a way to help create more independent films by a
variety of artists, while giving the local community an opportunity to
view these films collectively. The concept of using Super 8 cameras is
centered on the idea that Super 8 (often discarded to antiquity in this
digital age) is still the most affordable film gauge for independent
filmmakers. In recent years, more attention has been given to this film
format, as it once sat on the edge of extinction. Now its effects are
seen in major Hollywood films, as well as music videos and mainstream
television commercials. Films by: Justin Bowman, Edward Etienne, Felipe
Cardozo, Rapheal Cardozo, Shane Eason, Eric Freedman, Jeff Freeman, Eric
Fuhrman, Daniel Goegheghan, Nate Moyer, Telena Paris, Gabriel Perez,

Lauderdale, FL. Doors open at 10:30 pm; Screening to start at 11 pm.

WEST COAST FILM & VIDEO- FROM PORTLAND OREGON
Portland Oregon has long been a secret hotbed of film and video in the
United States, most recently coming to prominence with the success of
performance artist Miranda July's debut feature "Me and You and Everyone
We Know". This program celebrates the established and the emerging, from
documentary to experimental film, to video art. Bringing to the UK a

IN LOVING MEMORY AND SHORTS WITH FILMMAKER ROBERT TODD IN PERSON!
Part of the Documentary in Action: The Prison Series. Robert Todd's new
documentary/essay film, In Loving Memory (2005, 47 mins.) is haunting
reflection on the U.S. prison and death row system and the lives of
those incarcerated. The film combines texts written by inmates from
around the country with oddly lyrical, and often strangely beautiful,
"landscape" shots of prisons and correctional facilities and the
isolated areas in which they are located. Todd, an accomplished
experimental filmmaker, moves beyond the traditional documentary format
with his sensitive treatment of sound and image. His concern for formal
issues, which compliment and add resonance to the subject matter, give
In Loving Memory an emotional weight and quiet intensity often absent
from most films on this topic. The program will also include a selection
  of short films by Todd.

SANDRA GIBSON + LUIS RECODER: RECENT FILM INSTALLATIONS
Diapason Gallery presents Sandra Gibson + Luis Recoder: Recent Film
  Installations * Saturdays March 4, 18, 25, 2006 6pm - Midnight, Opening
  Reception: March 2 from 6 - 8pm * In the front room: Exciter ( Two 16mm
film projectors, double-perforated film loop (optical sound), mixed
media, dimensions variable; 2006) * In the back room: Atmos (Super-8
  film projector, humidifier, glass, mixed media, dimensions variable;
sound by Daniel Menche; 2006) * Both individually and in collaboration,
Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder are creating some of the most innovative
and engaging light works of the present time. I hesitate to say "films",
since their work, though it is grounded in an understanding and
application of celluloid, goes beyond a general understanding of what
film is, taking into consideration the architecture and circumstances of
the performance / viewing situation and the physical and emotional
presence of light itself. From the inventive ways that they create
images on the film strip to the use of multiple projection that often
incorporates live performance, Luis and Sandra are two of the most vital
young artists working in the field of "expanded cinema". – Mark Webber,

CHRIS MARKER'S CASE OF THE GRINNING CAT +
In the second session of our two-week suite on War and Peace,
here’s the latest from master French film essayist Chris Marker.
Shot on the streets of Paris over the course of mounting European
resistance to American imperial aims, this hour-long lyric plays out
Marker’s very personal fascination with the enigmatic appearance of
the cat, in this case appearing on the walls and placards of French
anti-war activists. This debut screening is facilitated by a live
translation by Colleen Silva. Supporting the premiere is an ensemble of
short subjects that also address this global horror-show through
artists’ eyes, including poignant pieces by Jacob Bricca, James
Schneider, and Edouard Salier. Free red wine.

 FILMFORUM'S 30TH ANNIVERSARY SERIES! REPLICATING 1976
First in a series. We're kicking it off with a replication of
Filmforum's first all Avant-Garde film show, held on Friday, February
20, 1976. This five-film program still holds up as a strong show of
experimental work, including a couple of films that are far too little
known today. Including Mother's Day (James Broughton, 1948), Desistfilm
(Stan Brakhage, 1954), Mass for the Dakota Sioux (Bruce Baillie,
1963-64), Plastic Haircut (Robert Nelson, 1963), and People Near Here
  (Ron Finne, 1969)

MAKING HISTORY IN AVANT-GARDE FILM: BENNING'S UTOPIA
Jeffrey Skoller continues his investigation of avant-garde film's
multi-faceted relation to history with tonight's screening of James
Benning's Utopia. Visually reminiscent of the "California Trilogy" in
its carefully wrought long takes of landscapes—here of Death Valley and
southwards, past the Mexican border—Utopia "steals" its soundtrack
wholesale from Richard Dindo's film about the last days of Che Guevara
and his unsuccessful Bolivian campaign. With the intriguing notion of
"virtual histories," Skoller examines Benning's piece and its
insinuations about the political and topographical history of Southern
California as a "complex interplay between events that actually did
happen and what can be imagined or desired in relation to them."
