Howdy all -

Thought I'd send out an update on the state of Nelson
film preservation, screenings, and availability for
those who might be curious.

PRESERVATION
Quite a few of RN's films have been preserved at this
point, by PFA and Academy:

PFA: Oh Dem Watermelons, Bleu Shut, Plastic Haircut,
The Great Blondino (currently in progress)

Academy: The Off-Handed Jape, Deep Westurn, Hot
Leatherette, Limitations, The Awful Backlash,
Confessions of a Black Mother-Succuba, and King David
(currently in progress)

This means new negatives, new sound elements, new
prints.

SCREENINGS
There've been a couple of "retrospective" type
screenings in the past two years, in Fall 2004 at
Other Cinema, and in July of 2005 at Anthology. The
big one coming up is Oberhausen in May, where there
will be five programs of Nelson's work, covering all
but a handful of his extant films. Robert will be
there for the festival, and then go on to Vienna where
four of the five programs will show at the Austrian
Filmmuseum. The dates for the Oberhausen shows are
May 5,6,8,9 and the Vienna dates are May 10 & 11.

AVAILABILITY
At this point, sorry to say that Robert's films still
aren't officially available for regular rental. I
don't know if that will change, but I think some of it
depends on how Robert feels about these screenings
coming up.

Anyhow, the plan is to assess the situation after
Oberhausen/Vienna. Robert seems more open than ever
to allowing screenings, and I'm going to try to figure
out how to make the films more available in a way that
he can deal with. I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks for listening, hope this info is of interest.
As always, feel free to contact me about Nelson
screenings/rentals if you like, I can often fulfill
individual requests as long as it doesn't get to be
too much for me to keep track of...

best wishes to all -

Mark T
