  "What You Looking At?" Greenwich Film Festival are thrilled to present a
  day of film on the edge of frame...with 2 programmes of uncompromising

  Dart novel Prod: Keith Griffiths Includes Dir./Prod Q&A UK Premiere of
  Chris Petit's Unrequited Love a film about the enigma of obsessive love,
  the delusions of belief and religion. Unrequited Love is about stalking.
  The film is based on the novel by Greg Dart and, according to the film
  makers, it is 'a film essay on cinema, absence, Hitchcock and Antonioni:
  a story of waiting, self-delusion, panic, fear of violence, modern
  technology(e-mail, mobiles, surveillance cameras) which defines both the
  urban stalker and the new breed of terrorist. Their methods duplicate:
  irrational and targeted. Stalking operates in the borders between normal
  love and pathological fantasy. Stalking wants nothing better than to
  move in and close the gap. Stalking is an externalised form of
  self-destruction. Stalkers are the fundamentalists of love.' Petit's
  unique, essayist film style is difficult to capture in a few words. He
  introduces discrepancies between image, music and sound, uses extreme
  wide-angle shots from impersonal security cameras and close-ups of
  action, makes post-modern use of other people's texts , with which he
  evokes a mood of alienation, confusion and passion in a possibly inhuman
  world. Chris Petit: 'What a film is aboutand how I film it are the same:
  subject dictates style.I like films that show a process; here, the
  emotional transfer between stalker and stalked.' (EH) CHRIS PETIT
  documentary maker and author of thrillers and novels. After he made his
  début in 1979 with the road movie Radio On, he went on to make several
  features, including the filming of P.D. James' An Unsuitable Job for a
  Woman. In the course of his development as film maker, Petit has
  displayed an increasing desire to experiment with narrative forms and a
  growing fascinationfor the compositional possibilities of new digital
  technologies. Sunday 26th March 6.30pm INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITIONIST Plus
  drinks reception in the luxe and relaxed screening room. Avant-garde
  filmmaking meets performance art in this lively, eclectic programme of
  video work made by internationally renowned artists from around the

 MAKING HISTORY IN AVANT-GARDE FILM: BENNING'S UTOPIA
  Jeffrey Skoller continues his investigation of avant-garde film's
  multi-faceted relation to history with tonight's screening of James
  Benning's Utopia. Visually reminiscent of the "California Trilogy" in
  its carefully wrought long takes of landscapes—here of Death Valley and
  southwards, past the Mexican border—Utopia "steals" its soundtrack
  wholesale from Richard Dindo's film about the last days of Che Guevara
  and his unsuccessful Bolivian campaign. With the intriguing notion of
  "virtual histories," Skoller examines Benning's piece and its
  insinuations about the political and topographical history of Southern
  California as a "complex interplay between events that actually did
  happen and what can be imagined or desired in relation to them."

 QUANTUM LEAPS WITH ASTRIA SUPARAK!
  QUANTUM LEAPS catalogues heroes, compresses history, and hallucinates
  futures. We are in a hyperdated time populated by minor celebrity
  comebacks and movie remakes, soundtracked by mash-ups and remixes, and
  backdropped by vintage/old school/retro simulacra. Artists now are as
  inspired by history they weren't quite conscious for as by their lived
  experiences. Here it is possible to amalgamate eras, to break out of
  social and gender constraints, and to cobble together a fantasy lineage.

 THE GRANDFATHER TRILOGY: ALAN ROSS
  Recently preserved by Chicago Filmmakers, The Grandfather Trilogy is
  Alan Ross' portrait of his grandfather in Bowling Green, South Carolina.
  Ross was a co-founder of Chicago Filmmakers and long time fixture in the
  Chicago filmmaking community. A profoundly moving work that attempts to
  come to terms with death as an event in the living world, The
  Grandfather Trilogy abounds with images which suggest stasis, absence,
  silence, horizontality, and oneness with the earth—a catalog of the
  conditions of death from the point of view of the living. "One of the
  ways I see the trilogy is as a radical approach to portraiture. Most of
  Papa was shot without looking through the viewfinder. There were,
  however, many accidents that happened while the camera was turned on.
  The film plays for me as a long sustained accident. I am grateful for
  this photographic record of a divinely shadowed presence. It is a
  reflection of a kind of space my grandfather generated."

  Cinematheque Ontario presents THE FREE SCREEN (formerly The
  Independents). The Free Screen is your window on the vast and rewarding,
  but often overlooked, world of unconventional, non-commercial cinema -
  those films and videos made by committed artists working outside of
  mainstream channels of production and distribution. These artists prefer
  to work free from the restrictive aesthetic conventions and commercial
  concerns of the movie business, a position which allows them to explore
  the possibilities of the art of cinema to the fullest. The Free Screen
  presents work by artists engaged in fields ranging from avant-garde film
  and animation to hybrid documentaries, essay films and video art, often
  with the artists in attendance to present their work. - Chris Gehman,
  Free Screen programmer. LIVES OF THE ANIMALS! Animals were among the
  first subjects of cinematic representation, beginning with Marey's birds
  and Muybridge's horses – and Cecil Hepworth's dog Rover was the first
  British movie star! Filmmakers have found in animals evidence of both
  inter-species empathy and the alien indifference of nature. Animals
  become allegorical stand-ins for people in narratives, and have been the
  subject of patient scientific scrutiny. In this programme, several films
  invite us to reconsider how we look at the animal world. Surrealist
  documentarian Jean Painlevé's outrageous nature/horror film LE VAMPIRE
  (France, 1939-45, 9 minutes, 16mm), cunningly cut to music by Duke
  Ellington, became for him an allegory about Nazi aggression. RAT LIFE
  AND DIET IN NORTH AMERICA (Canada, 1968, 14 minutes, 16mm), Joyce
  Wieland's witty tale of political utopianism, also refers to the
  political upheavals of its time, but the atmosphere in this case is
  optimistic. Made in the same year, Wieland's CATFOOD (Canada, 1968, 13
  minutes, 16mm), which documents a cat's methodical consumption of a
  fish, is a structural experiment with potent metaphorical implications:
  "The fish in Wieland's film, and the miraculous flesh of the film
  itself, are reconstructed on the rewinds to be devoured again. Here is a
  dionysian metaphor, old as the West. . . . Once we see that the fish is
  the protagonist of the action, this metaphor reverberates to
  incandescence in the mind" (Hollis Frampton). Rebecca Meyers'
  exquisitely photographed and tenderly observed NIGHT LIGHT AND LEAPING
  (USA, 2001, 22 minutes, silent, 16mm) comprises a year in the life of
  the artist's lovely black cat, and the programme closes with Jim
  Trainor's mordant THE BATS (USA, 1998, 8 minutes, 16mm), which
  speculates on the inner musings of cave-dwelling bats. All screenings in
  this series are FREE, non-ticketed events. Programming suggestions and

  (SF) Show by Natalija Vekic Before I ever had an inkling that I was
  going to be a filmmaker or heard of Greta Snider, I saw a bootleg copy
  of Hard Core Home Movie. To be honest, I had no experience with
  experimental filmmaking and didn't have the vocabulary to discuss the
  impact of the film, except that it blew my mind. It was made with a punk
  aesthetic that was personal and fun, and captured the raw energy and
  visceral experience of going to a punk rock show. I hadn't in my short
  and inexperienced life seen anything like it. Since that initial
  encounter with Hard Core Home Movie, I have had the pleasure of seeing
  most of Snider's films at independent screenings, festivals and on DVD.
  The films have a hand-made aesthetic and are often personal
  documentaries offering a window into the lives of the visionaries and
  weirdos that populate subcultures on the margins of our homogenous
  consumer society. Despite a stellar fall schedule of art openings and
  screenings, I was feeling extremely anti-social and unwilling to venture
  out into the world. What did the trick, what got me going was a phone
  call from my friend Johunna Grayson, who has been assisting Greta Snider
  on her most recent artistic endeavor. The ladies have been hard at work
  shooting, hand processing and assembling a series of personal portraits
  to be viewed in 3-D with custom built View-Masters. For any of you past
  the age of thirty, the sight of these nostalgia-laden plastic toys might
  just bring a tear to your eye. The View-Master resembles a pair of
  plastic binoculars loaded with a circular reel of slides that spin
  around incrementally to reveal a new 3-D image each time the user pushes
  on a plastic spindle. The invention dates back to 1939 when William
  Gruber combined the 3-D technology of Stereoscopic photographs with
  newly developed Kodachrome film to create the gadget. Vintage "scenic
  reels," often coveted by collectors, depict exotic travel locales and
  were sold in stationary stores like postcards. By the 1950s View-Master
  began to use popular television shows and movies as subjects, especially
  Disney characters aimed at a younger audience. Today, the View-Master is
  used to mass market Hollywood films and the latest popular cartoon
  characters. By turning the reels into an interactive art experience,
  Snider is transforming a mass-produced commercial product into a hand
  made object and capturing the personal histories of regular people, not
  often reflected or celebrated in popular culture. For the upcoming show,
  Greta approached a group of friends and asked them to choose a place in
  San Francisco where they would like to have their portraits taken. Not
  only are the reels portraits of individuals, but they also reveal the
  hidden treasures and underground spaces scattered throughout San
  Francisco. Look for Ivy McClellan's tour of a clandestine cement garden
  near Candlestick Park, Bill Basquin working the dirt on a plot of his
  community garden, and Craig Baldwin emerging from the basement of
  Artists' Television Access. With this latest project, Snider once again
  takes a potentially commercial medium and creates an intimate homemade
  record of peoples' personal lives.

 OSHIMA DOUBLE FEATURE: DEATH BY HANGING AND DIARY OF A SHINJUKU THIEF
  Nagisa Oshima's films of the 1960s combine incisive political commentary
  and riveting psychosexual explorations with a radical Japanese New Wave
  aesthetic. At 7 pm we present his early masterpiece Death by Hanging
  (1968), a Brechtian tour-de-force and one of the strongest indictments
  of capital punishment ever made on film. Based on an actual criminal
  case, the film tells the story of the execution of a Korean worker found
  guilty of rape as it denounces the oppression of Koreans in Japan and
  suggests that murder is the outcome of social repression. At 9:10 pm we
  screen Diary of a Shinjuku Thief (1969), a look into the sexual and
  cultural politics of young Japanese radicals of 1968 through the tale of
  a book thief/fetishist, with references to Japanese avant-garde theatre,
