Alain, Joost, and Tony,

Thank you for your input on my stroboscopy question. Per Joost's remark
on "persistence of vision," it's amazing how that idea has, well,
persisted. Last year I had several students complain about missing a
quiz question on flicker fusion and apparent motion because they had
been taught in their production courses that persistence of vision was
behind the illusion of motion in film. (That's probably a reversal of
the normal order of things - students in film programs probably get
more misinformation about production from their studies classes than
their production classes.)

I found a link to a very good little article on persistence of vision
through Fred Camper's excellent website. The link appears in Fred's
essay "The Trouble with Video," which will be familiar to veterans of
recent "film vs. video" skirmishes on Frameworks. That essay is here:

http://www.fredcamper.com/Film/Video.html

The link to Stephen Herbert's essay on POV is:
http://www.grand-illusions.com/percept.htm (you can get there by
clicking on the word "illusions" in Fred's essay, in the section
entitled "The Light." Anyone unfamiliar with Fred's website should
check it out.

Thanks again, everyone.

Jonathan
