Music Month, Switch'd on Video is a program of new video works that
feature electroacoustic music. The program aims to be international in
scope and include works by video, multimedia, and musical artists. This
program is organized by the local group IMMArts, whose mission is to
assist in the cross-fertilization of artists, computer programmers,
musicians, scientists, and academics in their explorations of the

Films by Thomas Comerford, 1997-2005. Sisyphus's Cinema, 1997, 4 mins.

retrospective screening of 16mm films by Thomas Comerford. Comerford's
work ranges from the structural conceit of Sisyphus's Cinema, which uses
the model of the palindrome (a word or phrase which spells the same
forwards and in reverse) to explorations of pinhole photography and
associated meditations on technology, perception, place and memory
(Départ, and ILLA CAMERA OBSCVRA and Figures in the Landscape). His most
recent film, Land Marked/Marquette, jettisons the fog and atmosphere of
pinhole in favor of clear, concisely observed landscape studies of sites
and monuments in Chicago connected to 17th century exploration by Jesuit
missionary Jacques Marquette, contemplating both historical
representation and the transformation of the land in the passage of

ranging from dancing plants and Norwegian forests to glimpses of autumn

ESSENTIAL CINEMA: STAN BRAKHAGE
ARABIC SERIES 0-10 1980-1981, ca. 95 minutes. "This series of films,
each extraordinarily unique from every other (except 0 + 10 going
together), is inspired and governed by strata of the mind's
moving-visual-thinking different from that of the ROMAN NUMERALS
series...or perhaps one should say that the ARABIC NUMERALS come to
fruition through some tree-of-nerves separate from that which gave birth
to the ROMANS (as it is physiologically deceptive to think of thought as
existing in 'layers'). The ARABICS range in length from approximately 5
min. to 35 min. and may be projected at 24 f.p.s. as well as 18 f.p.s.,
although the latter speed seems preferable for starts. I think each
film's integrity of rhythm would allow viewing at a greater variety of
speeds, were there 16mm projectors to permit that exercise. So far as I
can tell, they defy verbal interpretation (even more than their ROMAN
equivalents) and would, thus, seem to be closer to music than any
previous work given me to do; but if that be true, it is (as composer
James Tenney put it to me) that they relate to that relatively small
area of musical composition which resists song and dance and exists more
purely in terms of sound events in Time/Space. Finally, then, the
inspiration of all those modern (and a few ancient) composers I've most
loved since my teens overwhelms the easier, and comfortably lovely,
habits of jig and do-re-mi- AND creates a visual correlative of music's
eventuality – i.e. each ARABIC is formed by the intrinsic grammar of the
most inner (perhaps pre-natal) structure of thought itself." –S.B.

SHORT & WIDE (FROM 1.66 TO 1.85 AND BEYOND): NEW SHORT FILMS…NEW WIDE
FORMAT
Niagara Custom Lab's (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) recent project sees
filmmakers creating new works on 35mm. Encouraging makers to work in a
format often considered to be inaccessible to film artists, "short &
wide" is the fifth project initiated by this artistically focused motion
picture laboratory. More than just a film lab, NCL provides tools,
resources and a creative environment to contemporary film artists
interested in pushing the limits of the medium. "short & wide" includes
new works by: Brett Kashmere, Christina Battle, John Price, Josh
Bonnetta, Kelly Egan, Madi Piller, Michele Stanley, Sara MacLean,
Sebastjan Henrickson and Troy Rhoades.

critical interrogation of political violence and documentary strategies,
Speculative Archive (Julia Meltzer + David Thorne) presents their new
work shot in Damascus, Syria. It reflects on "how citizens think through
a complex political context in which thinking itself is crippled by
uncertainty, secrecy, and fear" (SA). Experimental geographer Trevor
Paglen follows with a multi-media lecture/performance, Tracking the
CIA's 'Torture Planes' based on research for his new book Torture Taxi
(with AC Thompson). He investigates planes and prisons used in the US
government's covert program to kidnap, "render," and "disappear"
suspected terrorists.)

MEDIASCOPE 2006 - AN EVENING WITH SUZAN PITT
Dedicated to experimentation with cinematic form and content, MediaScope
presents emerging and recognized artists who discuss their work with the
audience. The program explores filmmaking and videomaking, as well as
Web-based, installation, and digital art practices. Organized by Sally
Berger, Assistant Curator; Jytte Jensen, Curator; Laurence Kardish,
Senior Curator; Barbara London, Associate Curator; and Joshua Siegel,
Assistant Curator, Department of Film and Media. MediaScope is supported
by Jennifer McSweeney. Special thanks to First Run Features. An Evening
with Suzan Pitt Suzan Pitt (Los Angeles) has worked at the forefront of
indie animation since 1970. Pitt's work is recognized for the lavish
hands-on quality of her animated drawings, which she combines with dark
stories. This first New York retrospective includes her three major
works: Asparagus (1979), Joy Street (1995), and the recently completed
El Doctor (2006), all released for the first time on DVD by First Run
Features. Asparagus (a visual poem like Joy Street) traveled for two
years with David Lynch's Eraserhead on the Midnight Movie circuit,
rocking audiences with its rich cel animation and nightmarish plot. El
Doctor—written by Blue Kraning and inspired by the Mexican belief in the
miraculous, and featuring two sequences of experimental animation by Ben
Zelkowicz and Naomi Uman—is Pitt's first work using dialogue (Pitt
collaborated with Mexican animator Dominique Jonnard to record the
voices). Program 100 min.

STOREFRONT FILMS: INTERSTICES: MACHINIC VISIONS
Storefront for Art and Architecture is committed to the advancement of
innovative positions in art, architecture and design, embraces cinema
and highlights its significant role in representing the built
environment. The works in the three part series INTERSTICES explore the
space between presentation and representation, between data and fact,
experience and ideology and proliferate possible connections of gestures
to affects, and affects to perceptions. The foregrounding of interstice
calls attention to the processing of images, revealing how random
intervals of images can be made into a sequence by merely juxtaposing
them. What emerges is both a critical reflection on subjective positions
and identity politics, and the repeated displacement of gestures or
images into ideologically charged narratives. Such repetitions undermine
the construction of stable subject positions, re-envisioning what we
take for truth as a special effect or pure affect. INTERSTICES is
divided into a three-part film series spanning Oct-Dec. and includes
recorded performances of Pia Lindman. Each screening has a sub-theme
reflecting Lindman's work and echoing her artistic interests.
INTERSTICES explores the space between presentation and representation,

ROXY PRESENTS... SINGLE SHOT
Single Shot is a series of film and video works by artists and new
talent. The distinguishing feature of the project is that all of the
pieces are shot in one single take. Whether humorous or poignant,
seductive or disturbing - each work attempts to catch the viewer's eye
and hold it, unblinkingly, until the end. Single Shot is the first
product of a major new collaboration between UK Film Council's New
Cinema Fund and Arts Council England. The project has received
additional support from Illy. Single Shot is managed by Film and Video
Umbrella and Maya Vision International. Roxy Bar & Screen is a bar /
screening venue in London Bridge, which screens a variety of film and VJ
work in a comfortable bar environment on the 4m screen using a 3-chip
DLP projector. Entry to the venue / screenings is FREE.

BLACK MARIA FILM FESTIVAL: THE LEGACY OF THE SHORT FILM
The Black Maria Film Festival was named after the American birthplace of
the motion picture-Thomas Edison's West Orange, NJ, laboratory-a
revolving photographic studio called the Black Maria because it
resembled a police paddy wagon. Over the last twenty-five years,
founding director John Columbus has overseen this alternative festival,
which embraces the diversity and passion of the cinematic short form. It
provides many directors with their earliest exhibition opportunities and
discovers avant-garde and idiosyncratic talents. The festival also

THE FREE SCREEN - LIFT 25TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENINGS!
Cinematheque Ontario presents THE FREE SCREEN (formerly The
Independents). The Free Screen is your window on the vast and rewarding,
but often overlooked, world of unconventional, non-commercial cinema -
those films and videos made by committed artists working outside of
mainstream channels of production and distribution. These artists prefer
to work free from the restrictive aesthetic conventions and commercial
concerns of the movie business, a position which allows them to explore
the possibilities of the art of cinema to the fullest. The Free Screen
presents work by artists engaged in fields ranging from avant-garde film
and animation to hybrid documentaries, essay films and video art, often
with the artists in attendance to present their work. - Chris Gehman,
Free Screen programmer. LIFT 25TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENINGS! These two
programmes of brand-new films were commissioned by the Liaison of
Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT) to commemorate this
indispensable organization's 25th (silver!) anniversary. The project
comprises twenty short films, four film-based performances and two
installations, some of which will be presented at the parties following
the screenings (see details below). At a time when the imminent "death
of film" has been announced repeatedly for more than two decades, LIFT
and its members defiantly set out to show that film is not only a viable
medium of production, but also an important audio-visual art form. With
"Film is Dead . . . Long Live Film!," LIFT sets out to reconfirm film's
status as a personal art form at a time when commercial production is
moving increasingly into the digital realm, while the art world
dismisses it as old hat. Please note: All running times are estimated.

KAIJU! GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK!!
A mutant subculture growing out of post-war Japanese monster movies has
finally taken hold in America —with a vengeance! Our wise-crackin'
expert on Japanese popular culture Patrick ("Tiger on Beat") Macias
faces off with Australian enthusiast David Cox in a clip-happy
celebration of this bizarre rubber fetish. Macias, in town to tout his
new tome Otaku in U.S.A., comes fully loaded with over two hours of
carefully selected battle scenes, to flood the imaginations of the most
spectacle-craving kaijuphiles. Certainly the figure of Godzilla is a
