The Secret History of Indian Cinema
Various directors India 1hr 20mins
This programme presents revelatory and rare films from two founding
periods of Indian cinema: films by D.G. Phalke, "the father of Indian
cinema" and work from the Films Division, founded to document
Independent India.
These silent films will be accompanied by live music specially composed
for the programme by the talented Raju Mali - originally from Nepal and
now based in Handsworth - Birmingham, who is a multi-faceted musician
and producer who works with hip hop, RnB and jazz artists, arranged
through sampad, a dynamic development organisation for South Asian Arts
that plays a significant role regionally, nationally and
internationally in promoting the appreciation and practice of the
diverse art forms originating from the Indian subcontinent. sampad
carries out a range of projects and promotions across art forms,
including music, dance, theatre and visual arts, in cultural, youth,
community, education and professional development settings.
