I think Sony is definitely the way to go - none of the cameras are
great in low light, but otherwise they're the most reliable, in my
experience.
If you're getting a small, consumer-quality one, make sure it has a
manual focus ring (shockingly, some don't), and manual exposure control.
That should narrow the field of choices.
