That's great! I mean super 8 filmmaking classes are growing all along the globe. A couple of months ago we did a similar thing here in Barcelona for the second time and now we are triyng to release the second DVD. Even though we know it is completly different to see the super 8 pieces in digital than in the original format with the light and the sound of the projector, we all know (as Emmanuelle Lefrant said yesterday in Experimenta '07) that the are some reasons to transfer it to numbers. For example to be able to put sound in it (16mm and super 8 sound will always be less astonishing as digital sound), besides super 8 sound cartridges finished the year 1997.
Although I still think (as Pete Bianco defends) that almost all super 8 pieces should be silent and become impressive only with the image.
Below is the course done here and the cover of the first dvd.

Asunto: Announcing Super-8 Filmmaking Classes
Once again Pete Bianco, a graduate of SUNY Binghamton, will be teaching a hands-on super-8 filmmaking course beginning February 28th in experimental cinema. This class is a one of a kind for the area. Student assignments will use actual film, not video, which is becoming more and more of a rarity.
Super-8 is a small gauge film that was introduced in 1965. The film is light sensitive much like the film for a 35mm still camera. The editing process does not require computers. The film is cut by a razor in a splicer, then selectively taped back together with splicing tape.
Students will have the opportunity to view avant-garde films in the class, and begin creating their own. This class aims to re-sensitize the filmmaker to their surroundings and experiment with theories of visual perception. The students will be filming and editing outside of class. Each person works on their own project in contrast to hollywood or independent cinema where filmmaking happens in crews. This style of cinema can be purely visual rather than dramatic or plot based. All class assignments will be purposefully silent, taking a cue from Stan Brakhage one of the first film artists to go silent intentionally in the late 50's.
This class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., February 28th to April 25th. Equipment is provided. Visit www.openfilm8.com for a full class description. Call (315) 368-0788 if you are interested in taking the class. Class fee $150. Average supplyfee $150.
