The Filmex program was 1976. It was a regular printed page in the catalog, not a mimeographed insert. It was called "Masters of the American Independent Cinema." There were 23 films. In addition to Hall of Mirrors there were films by Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, Ron Rice, Bob Cowan, Jonas Mekas, Bruce Baillie, Robert Breer, Harry Smith, Peter Kubelka, Joyce Wieland, Michael Snow, Hollis Frampton, Ernie Gehr and George Landow.
It was curated by Eric Sherman, son of Vincent Sherman. He was on the feature selection committee with us, but he had a particular interest in experimental film and the leisure time to do curating, which I did not have. That year Eric also coordinated a visit by Stan Brakhage, who presented 27 of his films. It was fun to see a number of the feature films at the festival with Stan, among them Syberberg's Kark May, Godard's Numero Deux, and an incredible film by Jean-Jacques Andrien called "The Son of Amir Is Dead," which I would love to see again if anyone knows how to get it. Also that year George Kuchar and Curt McDowell presented Thundercrack. I remember seeing it with Stan and Chick Strand, then we all went out drinking with George and Curt. Filmex was always thrilling. There's a big chapter on it in my memoirs, a book in progress.

Subject: [FRAMEWORKS] 'Walk Away Renee" Experimental Film from Years Ago? at Filmex?
Thanks guys for the Hall of Mirrors reference-- memory does play its tricks. That might be it-- here's a possible hint--I remember seeing this film at the L.A Filmex, probably in 1976 or 1977. There were a bunch of Harry Smith shorts right before it-- one with Beatles songs?
Was anyone else there? Does anyone have a program from that showing? I remember it was a mimeographed insert.
