Yes, we did show "Victory Through Air Power" on nitrate, can't remember which year. Other nitrates, I believe, included "Sunrise" and "Vampyr" in different years. Filmex was the largest film festival in the world at that time, except for Cannes, which was regarded more as a market than a festival. We showed something like 350 films in two weeks. There were endless parties at embassies and Hollywood mansions, and I have great stories, like Stephane Audran swimming nude in the ocean at Malibu...

Thanks for the great info-- my memory is obviously failing, but at least I was right about the venue.

That was a good year for Filmex-- I was at the 'Karl May' showing and it was lots of fun. Nice to hear Brakhage was there. The Plitts were a fantastic place to see these films, too-- totally first class for the time. I was very sorry when those theaters went.

One of the things I remember about Filmex was that they were always able to get a hold of nitrate prints of some amazing movies, particularly from Disney, who I heard actually lent them an impossible-to-get seen print of 'Victory Through Air Power' one year. Did they ever end up getting it shown? That used to be the holy grail of Disney films because of its possible public domain status for many years. They wouldn't even let their own employees borrow it.

Anyway, that's a nice bit of research.
