George Herriman, the creator of Krazy Kat, was of African American heritage
(a fact many people don't know, as he himself downplayed it and allowed
people to think he was "Greek"), and his comic strip was made into animated
cartoons a number of times:

Herriman himself was not the animator, but I'd say these works would remain
significant.
