Taylor Mead's diary films are quite good. Also Phil Weisman's reg-8 diary films. I think you could make a case for Bill Brown as a diary filmmaker, too. There's a diaristic element to many Brakhage films as well.
For an early "theoretical" essay on diary film, I'd suggest WKL Dickson's article on the cinematograph, the title of which slips my mind, which describes film as a means of recording the past.
