CARRIAGE TRADE
Dir: Warren Sonbert. "My magnum opus. Travels over four continents in
six years." -W.S. "With CARRIAGE TRADE, Sonbert began to challenge the
theories espoused by the great Soviet filmmakers of the 1920s; he
particularly disliked the 'knee-jerk' reaction produced by Eisensteinian
montage. In both lectures and writings about his own style of editing,
Sonbert described CARRIAGE TRADE as 'a jig-saw puzzle of postcards to
produce varied displaced effects.' This approach, according to Sonbert,
ultimately affords the viewer multi-faceted readings of the connections
between shots through the spectator's assimilation of 'the changing
relations of the movement of objects, the gestures of figures, familiar
worldwide icons, rituals and reactions, rhythm, spacing and density of
images.'" -Jon Gartenberg

SAN FRANCISCO FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS SF360 FILM+CLUB: WHOLPHIN AT
MEZZANINE FEATURING THE DEBUT OF WHOLPHIN NO. 4 DVD MAGAZINE
San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco Film Society's SF360 Film+Club, a
monthly social screening series, returns to Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street
at Mint), on Tuesday, July 31, with a program of selected highlights
from the uniquely entertaining Wholphin, a quarterly magazine collection
of rare and unseen short films, about to release issue No. 4. The
featured films of the night are: Two Cars, One Night, the first film
from New Zealand director, Taika Waititi, whose feature film, Eagle vs.
Shark, played at the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival and
is in theaters this summer. Waititi is currently working on developing
Two Cars, One Night into a feature-length film, which will feature more
cars, more nights. An excerpt from Lynn Hershman Leeson's Strange
Culture (SFIFF 2007), an unconventional documentary that follows artist
and professor, Steve Kurtz, after the FBI falsely accuses him of
bioterrorism, because his artworks, which incorporate genetically
modified food and bacteria, are mistaken for WMDs. Chris Waitt's Heavy
Metal Jr. a documentary about a band of Scottish nine-year-olds
preparing to perform their song, "Satan Rocks," at their county fair.
Andrew Zuckerman and Alex Vlack's High Falls, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal
and Peter Sarsgaard as a couple keeping secrets from one another. High
Falls is also being expanded into a feature film. Toby MacDonald and
Luke Morris's Heavy Metal Drummer, the story of a Moroccan teenager
whose passion for heavy metal music sets him apart in the Arab world.
Morris's inspiration for this film came from "a story of 14 metalheads
who'd been arrested and tried in Casablanca for moral and religious
crimes, essentially, wearing Metallica T-shirts and having a penchant
for death metal." Olivo Barbieri's Site Specific_ LAS VEGAS 05 featuring
mind-bending aerial video footage that makes Las Vegas look like a
model. Barbieri's Site Specific series includes films on Rome, Shanghai
and Seville, and New York will be added next. Following the films there

creatures from the deep, disturbing bacteriaphage, a hive of alcoholic
bees and glofish. Doors open at Mezzanine at 7:00 pm, program starts at
7:30 pm. Complimentary Damrak and Agavero cocktails and tasting from
7:00 – 8:00 pm. Tickets are $8.00 at the door or $5.00 if reserved in

Hanover, Ontario (Canada): Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film
http://www.durhamart.on.ca/film/intro.html
8 pm, Hanover drive-in
LOVE AND (address suppressed) FABULOUS FESTIVAL OF FRINGE FILM
The Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film has invited a guest curator to
present a series of 35mm films at a drive-in theatre in Hanover,
Ontario. Love and Automobiles (working title) takes as its inspiration
the nostalgia of the drive-in theatre. Of interest to us is the
transformation of the automobile as a sort of time machine which
projects the viewer into another place without a kinetic utilitarian
function. In this static state, the car takes on other meanings. Our
selection of films will be guided by the specificities of the drive-in
experience. We wish to address films that reference automobiles and car
culture, ideas of nostalgia, landscape and notions of romantic love.
There is the possibility of showing silent 35mm with live sound and we
are also open to archival intermission films. "These screenings of 35mm
independent and experimental films at the Hanover Drive-In bring
alternative works to burgeoning communities of artists (painters,
photographers, filmmakers, media artists, etc) as well as to a general
public craving unique and alternate visions to the monoculture fuelled
by the 500 channel universe and mainstream Hollywood. Current works of
film art from Canada and overseas are screened in these programs in an
attempt to represent the global community of alternative practices in
filmmaking, which optimistically suggests a grand movie house of art and
politics that connects present life experience to the quickly
dissipating past." From "Extrapolations of the Real: Fringe Film at the
Drive-In" by Philip Hoffman, Curator of the series and founding member
of the Festival. Please send DVD or VHS previews to: Vicky Chainey

Chicago, Illinois: Diamonds At Dusk
http://www.myspace.com/diamondsatdusk
8:30, 6325 N. Lakewood (Red Line Granville Stop)
DIAMONDS AT DUSCK
An outside screening by Chicago-based, queer filmmakers, with work by
Michael Robinson, Amber Swanson, Doug Ischar, Latham Zearfoss, Marie
Martino, Lela May Klein, Becca Taylor, Madsen Minax, and Ren Velarde.
(Bring blankets, pillows, and small lawn chairs. In the event of rain,
the program will move inside.) $7; all proceeds will benefit the Actor
Slash Model documentary about Trans Musicians. FILM DESCRIPTIONS: Strip
by Marie Martino, 2006. Routine choreographies fail. Disconnection,
collision, and entanglement abound in this video about the complexities
of queer and familial love. brb (be right back) by Doug Ischar, work in
progress. This experimental film combines footage of a road trip to Palm
Springs with a vast, obsessive, and very kinky online chat between two
infatuated men. Although this is not apparent in the film itself, this
was the last conversation – in any form – that the two men ever had with
each other. A Four-Way Family Portrait by Latham Zearfoss, 2007. A film
of four visually and emotionally distinct vignettes through the
viewpoints of four archetypal family members: the wistful mother, the
distant father, the angsty daughter, and the ignored gay son. You Don't
Bring Me Flowers by Michael Robinson, 2005. Viewed at its seams, a
collection of National Geographic landscapes from the 1960's and 70's
conjures an obsolete romanticism currently peddled to propagate
entitlement and Individualism from sea to shinning sea; the slideshow
deforms into a bright white distress signal. A Different Kind of Hustle
by Lela May Klein, 2001. A 16mm documentary about the daily life of
Sarah, a mother, student, and exotic dancer living in upstate New York.
Their Bodies are Filled with a Liquid that Tends to Spread by Becca
Taylor and Madsen Minax, 2005. An animation project, made in conjunction
with Pilot TV, about a secret love affair between the captain of the
high school wrestling team and the yearbook photographer. on food film
friendship by Ren Velarde, 2007. A personal super 8 film about
masculinity, body image, and relationships. To Have, To Hold, To
Violate: The Making of Amerdoll, videos 1 – 5 by Amber Swanson, 2007.
Bizarre and funny, these videos feature the artist and the making of her
life-sized Real Doll, to whom she is now married. The couple's
forthcoming collaborative work, which includes re-enactment of cinematic
rape scenes and the tender "companionship" scenes that often precede
them, will premiere at Locust Projects in Miami during Mary 2008
