Students here use Avid on fairly modest PC laptops for standard DV editing. Marcos' link below is definitely research stop number 1. Take a special look at the approved audio and graphics cards. Get 2GB of ram. I'd splurge for a large (~160GB) 5400 rpm internal drive. Many vendors have specials on laptops right now. For PC, Tiger Direct and Frye's are not bad places to start. It will take some time studying the specs to match-up cards.
The fact that Xpress Pro comes with Mac and PC installs and transportable dongle makes it a very platform-friendly app. Although the Xpress Pro's compatibility is much greater, you can download and try out AvidFreeDV on any mac or PC laptop http://www.avid.com/products/freedv/index.asp . (They are removing this free download after Sept 1.) Un-install "Free" before installing Xpress Pro. Let us know the particulars if you locate an inexpensive "winner." Rob Danielson
