There's a little bit in Ray Durgnat's book "A Long Hard Look at
Psycho". (BFI, 2002)
Peter Gidal criticises the practice of using black as absent image, in
one of his essays, maybe "Theory and Definition of Structural
Materialist Film" (?).
What about Taka Imura too?
I, ahem, wrote an essay on Brakhage's Roman Numeral films, in which I
discuss his use of black frames (Stan Brakhage, an American Filmmaker,
edited by David James, Temple University Press, 2005)
Nicky Hamlyn.
