I use a Sony MD Walkman (minidisc recorder), with a Sony ECM - 717 stereo mic. The mic has a mini plug, so no adapters necessary.

When you have to put adapters in line with your mic, you are just asking for problems; extra noise, etc....
Try to never use adapters, if possible.

My system is hecka old by now, I bought it 8 or 9 years ago, but it is still perfect.
Sony makes some quality gear!

I like it because what I record, sounds *EXACTLY* like what you heard when you were recording it.

As far as not being tape, I don't find that a problem. There is a slight wait when you stop recording, and the disc is saving, but it has not been a problem.

It is not as long of a process as what I have seen with new video cameras that record to disc, where you have to wait minutes for the finalization process. (THOSE scare me, so many people that I know have lost footage because of trying to change the disc before it stopped its process....)

that's my 2 cents worth....
hasta.
