and film at Eyedrum ** Films: passage a l'acte (Martin Arnold, 1993):
From the maker of the classic Pièce Touchee, another labor-intensive,
subversive, frame-by-frame deconstruction of Hollywood. This time,
Arnold takes a family dinner scene from the film To Kill a Mockingbird,
and creates stuttering loops of sound and image to reveal the meanings
behind tiny movements and small gestures. ** Matthias Müller, Alpsee
(1994): Müller's sumptuously colorful, Kenneth Anger-influenced film is
a mysterious and memorable autobiographical glimpse of boyhood. "I could
not take my eyes off the mellow colors of this film." - Christian
Cargnelli ** Andy Ditzler and Blake Williams, Dining Room (2006): Dining
Room was shot in one take within a single room and features a real-time
monologue improvised during the shooting by Andy Ditzler. Alternately
directing the camera movements and addressing the audience, Ditzler

THE UNKNOWN PART OF THE WORLD: FILMS BY BEN RUSSELL (IN PERSON)
Beginning with the birth of the Universe and ending with the death of
the Self, these seven 16mm films by itinerant curator/filmmaker Ben
Russell map out an alternate timeline for the History of the World.
Working in locations as far afield as the South of France, Easter
Island, the Chilean desert, and the Inside of Your Skull, Russell
employs a mixture of cameraless film techniques, pinhole photography,
and imagery from Early Cinema in an attempt to produce the Ghost of Time

THE 2007 INTERNATIONAL EXPERIMENTAL CINEMA EXHIBITION (MONTRéAL, CANADA)
Hosted by the Double Negative Film Collective of Montréal, the festival
is held November 2-4, 2007. A Super-8 screening and reception kick the
event off on Friday night, while the majority of the film screenings
take place on Saturday at Concordia University's J.A. de Sève Cinema.
Sunday features an intimate round-table discussion with the visiting
filmmakers lead by TIE curator, Christopher May. TIE-2007 features over
thirty films by eighteen filmmakers. Those to be in attendance to
discuss their films in person include Jeanne Liotta, Robert Todd, Daichi
Saito (Montréal resident), and Jonathan Schwartz, among others. A full

WOMENSWORK MEDIA COLLECTIVE
The Womenswork Media Collective, a group of media artists based in
Jersey City will screen work on Saturday evening, November 3rd, as part
of the Personal Cinema Series at Millennium Film in NYC. The showcase
was curated by founder Jane Steuerwald, the coordinator of Womenswork.
Millennium Film was founded in 1966 and is one of the oldest media arts
centers in the United States, now celebrating its 40th year of
operation. Millennium has continuously presented ongoing film-talks and
screenings in its Personal Cinema Series. Organized by Program Director
Howard Guttenplan, screenings consist of film/video programs with the
artists present to engage in a dialogue with the audience. Founded in
2002, Womenswork facilitates the production, promotion, and exhibition
of independent films and videotapes by women. The collective is
dedicated to empowering, promoting, nurturing, and mentoring women in

to late-breaking developments in flying-saucer engineering with his

ZANZIBAR FILMS AT CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO
DÉTRUISEZ-VOUS Director: Serge Bard (France, 1968, 75 minutes). The
first Zanzibar film, DÉTRUISEZ-VOUS takes its title from an oft-repeated
'68 slogan ("Aidez-nous, détruisez-vous") and its lead from Godard's LA
CHINOISE, Warhol's Factory, and the French Revolution. A drop-out from
Nanterre University, Serge Bard returned to the school to shoot his film
in April '68, just a month before the student protests erupted.
Incidentally, Anne Wiazemsky, who stars in LA CHINOISE, was also a
student at Nanterre at that time. Bard's muse, the English fashion model
Caroline de Bendern, plays a confused member of an agit-prop cell led by
Alain Jouffroy, cast as a professor proselytizing revolution to a near
empty classroom. Juliet Berto, who also appears in LA CHINOISE, is
another member of the cadre but offers no sisterly love to de Bendern,
who grows increasingly uncertain and fragile in light of all the
militancy. Followed by: LA RÉVOLUTION N'EST QU'UN DÉBUT, CONTINUONS LE
COMBAT (THE REVOLUTION IS ONLY A BEGINNING: LET'S CONTINUE) Director:
Pierre Clémenti (France, 1968 30 minutes, silent). Recently discovered,
the first film by actor-director Pierre Clémenti is a brash and stylized
manifesto for a "permanent revolution," "spontaneous creation," and
"poetry of the streets." Its use of filters and superimpositions creates
a trippy, psychedelic salvo quite the opposite of Garrel's form of
attenuated hallucinations. Parallels with Warhol's Factory films can be
discerned in LA RÉVOLUTION N'EST QU'UN DÉBUT, in which appear many key
Zanzibar figures and their band, Les Fabuleux Loukoms, later known as
Les Jeunes Rebelles. It's both a diary of sorts and an important
historical document whose reappearance has been met with much

CRAZY LOVE (JAPANESE ART AND POLITICS)
Okabe Michio began his career in the fine arts. Inspired by the works of
Kenneth Anger and the American underground, he gravitated towards
filmmaking. CRAZY LOVE was his second work and the first feature-length
underground film in Japan. Eschewing narrative and meaning, Okabe
instead layered the film with the music he liked, from the Beatles and
James Brown to Enka and Group Sounds, and inserted sequences of
performances and happenings, creating a true document of the Shinjuku
underground scene. Okabe himself appears recreating his favorite roles,
from BONNIE AND CLYDE to Spaghetti Westerns, as well as incorporating
quotations by inserting stills of Godard, Kennedy's assassination and
the Vietnam War. Correlated with Susan Sontag's theorization of kitsch,
as well as employing the queer lingo of "camp," the film's relentless
equal-opportunity pop-art montage shattered the foundations of
conventional cinema, including the experiments of the early-60s,
liberating infinite new possibilities. Sunday, November 4 at 8:00.

JACKIE RAYNAL'S DEUX FOIS AT CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO!
DEUX FOIS (TWICE UPON A TIME) Director: Jackie Raynal (France, 1968, 70
minutes). "If I wanted to convey the excitement of France in 1968, this
brave, pleasure-driven provocation would undoubtedly carry me part of
the way" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). Jackie Raynal was
France's youngest professional editor, working alongside Eric Rohmer and
Jean Eustache when Sylvina Boissannas offered to fund her filmmaking
debut. Raynal accepted the challenge with relish and shot DEUX FOIS in
just nine days in Barcelona, becoming the female embodiment of the dandy
in unconnected episodes with hints of Buñuel and Cocteau. The film is
widely considered a landmark work of feminist cinema. "Perhaps the best
Zanzibar film, Raynal's DEUX FOIS transcends mere experiment. A
fractured fairy tale that begins with Raynal's Pre-Raphaelite
self-portrait and ends with a recitation from Calderon's La Vida es
Sueño, DEUX FOIS reworks cinematic language into the enigmatic whispers
of a dream" (Ed Halter, The Village Voice). "She put in her film the
visionary crazed coldness of major paranoiacs. We also find the
murderous, painful madness of Fritz Lang's great films, in which all the
fiction is reduced to sketchy outlines, arabesques, leaving almost no

NICK ZEDD IN PERSON
NICK ZEDD, long identified with a film movement entitled "The Cinema of
Transgression," is a filmmaker, performer, writer and editor. Always
highly controversial, his work has been embraced by some and disliked by
others. With his recent "Electra Elf" series, he seems to have moved in
a surprisingly different direction. In 2004, Nick Zedd premiered a
television series on MNN called "The Adventures of Electra Elf."
Combining action, satire and special effects, the series features local
[NYC] art stars and comedians. Weekly episodes present superheroes and
supervillains in absurd morality plays assaulting consensus reality in
an offbeat manner. "No Plague Like Home" deconstructs the genre,
addressing the issues of implantable microchips and the '9-11 Inside
Job' along with the dangers of watching television."—N.Z. This show
features recent episodes of the wacky TV series "Adventures of Electra
Elf" starring Rev Jen, Patron Saint of the Uncool: "Filthy Rich,"

CHRIS WELSBY: IN CONVERSATION, AT SEA
Seascapes have a long history in filmmaking and continue to fascinate
moving image artists. Chris Welsby has made a number of works that
contemplate the ocean and the inability of the camera, the frame and the
viewer to appreciate its enormity; including AT SEA (installed at the
Lethaby Gallery) and DRIFT (screened later tonight). This conversation
between Chris Welsby, Catherine Elwes (artist, writer and Reader in
Moving Image Art, Camberwell College of Arts) and William Fowler
(Curator of Artists' Moving Image, BFI National Archive) will reflect on
the phenomenon of the moving image seascape from early 'Rough Seas'
films through to contemporary practice.

Chris Welsby's films are dialogues between the filmmaker and the natural
elements: the wind controls the movements of the camera in TREE and the
film speed in ANEMOMETER. Later films address environmental concerns,
such as the threat of radiation as a Geiger counter provides SKY LIGHT's
post-Chernobyl soundtrack. Shifting from environmental structuralism to
a more observational mode, the final film Drift has the viewer literally
drifting off into a world beyond gravity, into an abstract space between

CATCHING UP WITH THE KUCHAR BROS.
It's about time that Anthology devoted a regular series to the Twin
Titans of underground cinema, George and Mike Kuchar. Long celebrated
for their collaborative and independently produced 8mm, 16mm and video
epics, the Kuchars have been lovingly churning out movies since they
were mere tykes. With over 50 years of films and videos to choose from
we won't have any problem finding works to screen from here till, well,
eternity. The series will try to focus on new works (of which there are
always plenty), as well as favorite films and forgotten near-classics.

JOSEF ROBAKOWSKI IN PERSON AT CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO!
Based in £ódŸ, Józef Robakowski is one of Poland's most important
multi-disciplinary artists, whose internationally-celebrated career
spans more than forty-five years. An art historian, professor at the
£ódŸ Film School, and co-founder of several avant-garde groups in
Poland, Robakowski has been the key initiator of numerous, significant
art events that put Polish artists in touch with projects on the other
side of the Iron Curtain. During martial law, which began in 1981 and
lasted until 1989, public presentations were prohibited, yet Robakowski
continued to organize art events – using his apartment as a venue –
including screenings of Paul Sharits' structuralist films. Many artists,
including Robakowski, were forbidden to travel abroad, and his work was
also prevented from leaving the country. Nonetheless, their creative
spirit was not completely extinguished during this dark era in Polish
art; production continued despite the secret police watching their every
move, fearful of potential dissident activity. Several of the works
included in this programme were made or conceived during this period,
such as ATTENTION: LIGHT! Initially a Sharits-Robakowski collaboration,
this piece was conceived by Sharits during his final visit to Poland in
1981, after being profoundly moved by Frédéric Chopin's music and the
spirit of solidarity among the Polish people. Upon his arrival in the
US, Sharits sent a detailed score for the film to Robakowski. ATTENTION:
LIGHT! is the expression of friendship between these two artists, who
lived on two different continents and under opposing political systems,
and who met through art and "loved each other through Chopin and art"

The Outer Ear Festival of Sound and CATE present a special-two-part
evening of films, videos, and performances that mine the relationships
between sound, performance, and cinema. Chris Mann, Danièle Wilmouth,
Trevor Martin, and Kym Olsen in person! Renowned Australian poet,
composer, and performer Chris Mann takes advantage of the Film Center's
surround-sound system in boy, what god could've done if only he'd had
money, a live, multi-channel audio performance of intelligence and wit.
Mann's performance is paired with SAIC faculty member Danièle Wilmouth's
film collaboration with the performance duo Morganville (SAIC alumni Kym
Olsen and Trevor Martin, also SAIC faculty), A HERETICS PRIMER ON LOVE &
EXERTION: 29 INCIDENTS OF DUAL CONSEQUENCE. Scored by Mark Messing and
Split Lip Rayfield, Martin and Olsen slip from monologue to dance,
trousers to dresses, and male to female as the camera spins around them.

Thompson's disquieting film collages and faculty member John Corbett's
vinyl manipulations, ALPHABET tracks centuries of female malady,
disproving the theory that "time heals all wombs." A Theater Oobleck

SMOULDERING FIRES (BROWN)
From the collection of David Mulkins. Though best remembered today as
the director of such important 1940s films as THE YEARLING, NATIONAL
VELVET, and INTRUDER IN THE DUST, or as Greta Garbo's most frequent
director in the 1930s, some of Clarence Brown's finest work is actually
from the silent-era 1920s. A protégé of Maurice Tourneur, Brown is
believed to have been responsible for much of that director's THE LAST
OF THE MOHICANS after Tourneur fell ill. Brown's best-known 1920s films
are the costume films THE EAGLE, with Valentino, and FLESH AND THE
DEVIL, with Garbo & John Gilbert. Lesser known, but highly regarded by
those who have seen them, are two social dramas from 1924-25, THE GOOSE
WOMAN, with Louise Dresser, and SMOULDERING FIRES, with the great
Pauline Frederick. SMOULDERING FIRES is a love triangle about a stern
40-ish female factory owner (Frederick) who falls for a younger employee
(MacGregor), who in turn becomes smitten with the woman's younger sister
(LaPlante). As a "woman's picture", the film is a fascinating reflection
of the conflicting attitudes and prejudices about women, power, and the
aging process. In some ways it anticipates the type of films Bette Davis
and Joan Crawford made in later decades, though the melodramatic
elements are here notably restrained. When it was released in 1924,
SMOULDERING FIRES was praised for Brown's direction and for Frederick's
performance. Eighty-one years after it was released, it is ripe for
rediscovery. Plus: Buster Keaton in ONE WEEK (1920) Chronicles seven
days in the life of newlywed Buster and his bride as they attempt to
build and make habitable a build-it-yourself pre-fab home. Completion

THE UNKNOWN PART OF THE WORLD: FILMS BY BEN RUSSELL (IN PERSON)
Beginning with the birth of the Universe and ending with the death of
the Self, these seven 16mm films by itinerant curator/filmmaker Ben
Russell map out an alternate timeline for the History of the World.
Working in locations as far afield as the South of France, Easter
Island, the Chilean desert, and the Inside of Your Skull, Russell
employs a mixture of cameraless film techniques, pinhole photography,
and imagery from Early Cinema in an attempt to produce the Ghost of Time

Anne McGuire re-edits Robert Wise's 1971 film The Andromeda Strain

spellbinding film that throws everything from story structure to
character motivation into question.

video from the other side: a meta-metaphor of American economic
imperialism, told through CGI multiplex trailers and masochistic
Hollywood fantasies. Culled from Bay Area legend Craig Baldwin's
infamous personal archive of obscure cinephemera—gladiator flicks,
newsreels, travelogues, James Bond films, B-grade horror and Mexican
thrillers—Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America implodes an SF
universe into the hot core of the New World Order psyche.

ZANZIBAR FILMS AT CINEMATHEQUE ONTARIO
NEW 35MM PRINT! FUN AND GAMES FOR EVERYONE Director: Serge Bard (France,
1968, 53 minutes). "We must burn all the bridges, and transform the
shock of identification into an aggressive shock. Of each film, we will
make a question mark whereby the thought of the spectator will be, as
the case may be, the only response, or absence of response. In short,
that means war" (Serge Bard). This medium-length film documents a
vernissage in a Paris gallery for Olivier Mosset, whose black-and-white
canvasses provide the backdrop to an assembly of older bourgeois patrons
and young hipsters, their conversations obscured by Barney Willen and
Sunny Murray's entrancing jazz score. In his efforts to create violent
cinematic juxtapositions, fusing life and art, Bard sought to return
cinema to zero, and found a parallel tabula rasa theme in the paintings
of his confrere, Mosset. This quest for origins ultimately led them to
the Maoist island of Zanzibar – a trip that was reportedly severely
impeded by their nihilistic spirit. Mosset ultimately fled for the
desert. Followed by: HOME MOVIE: ON THE SET OF PHILIPPE GARREL'S 'LE LIT
DE LA VIERGE' Director: Frédéric Pardo (France, 1968, 30 minutes,
silent). Frédéric Pardo was a famous painter and partner to actress Tina
Aumont (PARTNER, LE LIT DE LA VIERGE, daughter of Maria Montez). The
couple often played host to the other Zanzibar members, creating
communal, salon-style settings for creative projects. HOME MOVIE: ON THE
SET OF PHILIPPE GARREL'S 'LE LIT DE LA VIERGE' documents Garrel's inner
circle in Morocco in 1968 on the set of one of the director's most
mystical films. Its behind-the-scenes footage is also a portrait of
Pardo's lover, the enigmatically beautiful Aumont. and: UN FILM PORNO
Director: Olivier Mosset (France, 1968, 3 minutes). After having spent a
year in Warhol's Factory, painter Olivier Mosset returned to Paris with
an appetite for film and began hosting Super 8 nights in his apartment.
