in catherine russel's Experimental Ethnography: the Work of Film in the
Age of Video, there is a chapter called "Arhival Apocalypse: Found Footage
as Ethnography." i have a copy if you want it. it addresses, among other
things, the special interest folks have in scenes of destruction.
