Your through the lens light meter is probably "metering" everything in
your field of view, even if it's center weighted, and is giving you an
"average" exposure somewhere in between what's correct for the moon and
what's correct for the night sky. (I'm assuming you can't zoom in far
enough so that part of the moon fills the field of view.) This is a fact
about through the lens light meters that everyone should be aware of. A
woman in a white dress filling a large part of the frame will cause the
meter to stop down, perhaps more than you want it to.

Why not make some brief tests at many different exposures?
