I once pulled some films off ubuweb to find next morning a string of
angry letters on frameworks about it.

Streaming films that are in distribution goes completely counter to
their charter, but it is a complex issue. (See for example Kevin
Kelly's fascinating article about google scanning all known books in
order to become the new library of alexandria and the evolution of
copyright law that it reverses:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/14/magazine/14publishing.html?_r=1&n=Top/News/Business/Companies/Wikipedia&pagewanted=all&oref=slogin)

I later allowed ubuweb to show certain films that we (Re:Voir) have
rights to, provided they make a link to our site. For example, if you
watch Hans Richter's films on ubu, there is a direct link to us. And
there are a lot of free clips on our site of many of the films we
have published (http://re-voir.com). But since then Ubu has put up a
lot of the films we have rights too, as well as other publishers,
without our permission.
