Hi Robert. There are step-by-step instructions at
http://www.instructables.com/id/Sync-Digital-Sound-to-Your-16mm-Film-Projector
describing the magnet tachometer setup, so I'll concentrate on your other
questions here. The signal that Film-O-Sync expects is really any periodic
waveform. It filters the input to chop off high-frequency noise and then
counts how many times/sec the signal crosses zero. So a sine or square
should both work. (The magnet tachometer makes a quasi sine.) It's all
setup with a 1:1 ratio, so crystal 24fps projection would create a 24Hz
tone, which would tell Film-O-Sync to play your soundfile at exactly 100%
speed. Hope it helps and feel free to email me off-list if you want to get
more in-depth.
