And certainly not the least of Bruce Conner's accomplishments was his participation in the Bay Area hillbilly jug band the Poontang Wranglers ("famous" for performing--at such events as baby showers and in matching red suits of long underwear).

(this is not bullshit, and I admire Bruce for this. some of his bandmates are acquaintences of mine through my work with KALX, a Berkeley radio station)
Not sure if this has been mentioned here yrt but there is an exhibition of his photographs documenting San Francisco's punk currently on view at the Berkeley Art Museum:
