*The Presence of Place
Wednesday, September 24th, 7pm *
BRIC Rotunda Gallery
33 Clinton Street
Brooklyn, NY

Films include:
*Kolkata, *Mark LaPore, 16mm, 2005, 35 min
*Cargo*, Laura Waddington, video, 2001, 29 min *
Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, *Chris Sullivan, 16mm, 1994, 26 min* *

In conjunction with the gallery exhibition *A Wrinkle in Time*, *The
Presence of Place* highlights a group of film and video artists whose work
addresses political and personal struggles to define the local in a larger
context of historical displacement – who address the erosion of the cultural
distinctiveness of place. These films examine cultural identity as not an
essential, established fact bounded by discrete space, but a fluctuating
position of historical placement and displacement. One film examines the
deterioration of the present into anonymity, one addresses the liberty of
places denied, and in one film the stranger is confronted with the
overwhelming sensorial immediacy of a foreign space.
