Narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi - star of the landmark television series "I,
Claudius" - this documentary explores art and culture around the Bay of
Naples before Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 ad. The bay was then the most
fashionable destination for vacationing Romans. Julius Caesar, emperors, and
senators were among those who owned sumptuous villas along its shores.
Artists flocked to the region to create frescoes, sculpture, and luxurious
objects in gold, silver, and glass for villa owners as well as residents of
Pompeii and other towns in the shadow of Vesuvius. The film concludes with
the story of the discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum from the 18th century
onward.

There is an ancient myth that the light in Holland is unique. The special
quality of Dutch light was discovered by artists and celebrated in their
work. The German artist Joseph Beuys argued that Dutch light lost its
radiance around the middle of the 20th century. Where does fact end and
fiction begin? Dutch Light draws the viewer into a hypnotic maelstrom of
ideas, theories, colors, images, landscapes and, of course, light.

H.P. Lovecraft (b August 20, 1890, d. March 15, 1937) is considered to be
one of the greatest writers of horror fiction since Edgar Allan Poe. His
influence on modern horror has been enormous both in print and in film, and
stems from his fusing the best traditions of gothic horror on both sides of
the Atlantic, and blending in elements of science fiction thus popularizing
the notion of "cosmic horror."
Adapting Lovecraft to the big screen has never been an easy task given the
structure of his stories and the emphasis on atmosphere over action.
Screenwriter Kelly Young of Maelstrom Productions had this to say about
adapting the works of H.P. Lovecraft to the screen, "I feel that The Thing
on the Doorstep is absolutely the most film-friendly of Lovecraft's works in
that it fits into a three-act structure and has a strong female presence."
The Thing on the Doorstep is a unique story about an unfortunate marriage
between a precocious scholar (Edward Derby) and a young heiress (Asenath
Waite) who has mysterious hypnotic powers. Edward soon after their marriage
exhibits severe mood swings and radical personality changes. What is the
source of Asenanth's sway over Edward? What is the influence that her
deceased sorcerer father (Ephraim Waite) has over her? The only thing
standing between Asenath and her unspeakable plans to sow death and madness
is Edward's graduate advisor, professor Dan Upton. But is Dan too late to
stop what has been set into motion?
The DVD also contains the short films Maria's Hubris by Patrick Weber and
the animated short film From Beyond by Michael Granberry, an interview with
director John Carpenter regarding Lovecraft, and openers from the H.P.
Lovecraft Film Festival.

The first volume in The Edgar Allan Poe Collection contains some excellent
adaptations of Poe's work including George Higham's award winning
stop-motion animation short film inspired by the poem Annabel Lee. Annabel
Lee is quintessential Poe-a haunted soul, a lost love and the nocturnal
grave-quest. The epic quality of this Orphic adventure includes
expressionist visions of a lone figure on a journey through a nightmarish
landscape in order to be re-united with his lost love... but first he must
overcome the wrath of the "Envious Angels" that ruined his world.

The first volume in The Weird Tale Collection contains some excellent
adaptations of horror author Robert W. Chambers' work including Aaron
Vanek's award winning short feature film inspired by the short story "The
Yellow Sign" in the book The King in Yellow. In the movie, a young art
gallery owner, Tess Reardon (played by Little Giants star Shawna Waldron),
is looking for new talent to spark life into her failing business. Haunted
by nightmares, she discovers that an artist she dreamt about, Aubrey Scott,
actually exists, and she seeks him out. The eccentric painter agrees to a
showing of his art, but only if Tess will model for his new work. She
grudgingly agrees and begins to regress into a past life from a parallel
world, and that everything is not at all as it seems.
