Great book about this -- The Imperial Middle -- Why Americans can't think
straight about class by Benjamin DeMott.

(disclaimer, it was inspired by all the class-bashing our film Seventeen
encountered, and it is discussed in the acknowledgements though not the
book. DeMott was my partner Jo DeMott's father, and we all had a great time
finding examples for the book. I found the piece in the NY Times that
pointed out that crack dealers don't get health benefits from their
employers. Can't make this stuff up.)
