Ah yes...Mr. Baldwin! Also, his Specters of the Spectrum (1999) could fit
the theme in a Cold War anxiety¹ kind of way.
Also, Peter Weir¹s The Last Wave (1972) is definitely an end of the world
story (though I don¹t remember liking it very much).
