FYI, the Conservative government here in Canada actually INCREASED
arts funding in the latest budget, despite curdling the blood of
Harper's dyed-in-the-wool supporters.
It's part of his two-part strategy to raise conservative fortunes in
feisty, independent-minded quebec.
Step 1:
Do something to pander to Quebec-sovereignist elements (i.e. declare
that quebec forms a nation, offer to re-balance the federal-provincial
balance of transfer payments).
Step 2:
Do something to infuriate same (mock arts and culture as nothing more
than a bunch of fancy galas, talk about arts and culture in reference
only to your own prime ministerial self being a bad singer at parties,
and cut arts funding).
* * *
Repeat until de-elected.
He's been trying to split the leftist, artsy, intellectual big-city
sovereignists from the rural, conservative, ahem, race-oriented
separatists.
Unfortunately, both of them support Quebec cultural funding, even if
it's from Ottawa. Backfire!
