Jason,
I hear where you are coming from.
I used to work a very infamous film related job here in NY and although it
could have worked out otherwise it would constantly get me down about the
future of film and about making films. I always kept in mind that this was
only my day job, this is where I made the money to do the things I actually
wanted to do. So on the weekends and when I had free time I would work on my
film. I also always kept in mind that what I was doing was nothing new to
the word of experimental film or art in general. There is a long history of
great filmmakers having to work crappy jobs in order to make their work.
Knowing that people I respected had been in my position before me motivated
me in a way to see my job as just work and my own personal work as the
reason for enduring what I had to endure day in and day out.
My other advice would be to go to museums, I think some one mentioned this
earlier but go out and see other forms of art. I can't tell you how much
painting has influenced the way in which I go about making films. Also, if
you happen to be in the NY area and are interested in and internship at the
Filmmakers Co-op let me know.
good luck.
