Are they charging people to come see the films? Are you a big enough
draw that programming your work is guaranteed to bring a lot of people
in? If either of those conditions are met, it might be appropriate to
ask to negotiate something. Otherwise, this isn't exactly a one-way
relationship. Presumably you'd benefit from the exposure and could
parlay this into future opportunities.
Given that they want to screen your work for a month, it seems
reasonable to me to expect a fee, but I don't think it should expected
across the board. If a festival wanted to program a couple of your
films, would you expect a fee for that? Most people on this list are
struggling filmmakers. Don't forget that art spaces are struggling
too. It's an honor to be asked to screen anywhere, let alone for a
month-long engagement. Sharing your work should be the #1 goal. No one
becomes an experimental filmmaker for the money.
