CLANDESTI: LOCK OUT IS PRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN U.S.
CLANDESTI: FORBIDDEN CATALAN CINEMA UNDER FRANCO at The Film Society of
Lincoln Center May 8-12, 2009 Hit the Streets with a selfless band of
independent filmmakers that exposed Franco's dangerous regime, uncovered
the nation's lingering wounds, and altered the course of Spanish
history. CLANDESTI: FORBIDDEN CATALAN CINEMA UNDER FRANCO focuses on a
generation of independent filmmakers whose innate unwillingness to
conform forced them to produce, distribute, and exhibit radical
clandestine films in Catalonia, with the furtive hope of sending them
into the rest of Franco's Spain. These films are so forbidden that for
most of them, this is the first screening in the U.S. Guests in
attendance. LOCK OUT at 8.30 PM

SOUND AND VISION: GENDREAU + CHURCHILL + BUCHLA
Curated by Christine Metropoulos, OC celebrates the return of an old
acquaintance and sonic accomplice, Michael Gendreau, with an evening of
unnerving vibrations and sensory destabilization. Ezra Buchla—in a solo
detour from Gowns—uses mathematics, a very small computer, and analog
video to synthesize the aural and the optical. Joshua Churchill, known
for his site-specific sound and light performances, escalates the tone
with an abstract collage of drone, doom, and noise, feeding into
electronic-media artist Andrew Benson's complex video processes.
  Gendreau releases a ground-shaking psycho-spatial-acoustic composition,
designed specifically for the space, and "expanded" to include the
ocular realm. The artists commence the event with a unique
  collaboration. *8.

IN PRAISE OF INDEPENDENTS: THE FLAHERTY: JAMES BENNING
James Benning's RR: Avant-garde filmmaker James Benning has been
recording his chronicles of the American landscape for forty years. His
new ode to freight trains and the vast terrains they traverse is
destined to be his final film in the handmade 16mm format. The film's
formalism belies at times "a spiritual kinship to American literature,"
writes Jonathan Rosenbaum,"evoking writers like Carl Sandburg, Laura
Ingalls Wilder, and John Dos Passos."(James Benning, 2008, 16 mm, 110
  minutes)

 ABSTRACT CINEMA & TECHNOLOGY
Abstract Cinema investigates how technological innovations from the
early 1930s to the present provided artists with new means to create
abstract moving images. With the emergence of new technologies, new ways
to envision the world and communicate ideas have arisen in tandem.
Abstract Cinema will bring together a wide range of artists who have
broken boundaries by using new media in creative ways. Abstract Cinema
is curated by MOCA Executive Director Bonnie Clearwater in association
with MOCA Exhibition Coordinator Kevin Arrow. March 25, 2009-May 10,
  2009.

NEW MASTERS OF EUROPEAN CINEMA: PéTER FORGáCS IN PERSON
Erasmus Award recipient Péter Forgács' latest film "Hunky Blues -- The
American Dream" interprets the lives of ordinary Hungarians who arrived
in the United States in the early 20th century. Reconstructing their
history from evocative reels of home-movie footage and forgotten audio
recordings, Forgács creates poetry from these implausible sources.
Following the screening, he will discuss his film. Presented in
association with the Hungarian Cultural Center and Extremely Hungary, a
celebration of the country's contemporary arts and their impact on
American culture. (Péter Forgács, 2009, HD-Cam, 75 minutes)

8:30pm, 631 W. 2nd St.

 CHERYL DUNYE- THE WATERMELON WOMAN
Los Angeles theatrical revival 1996, 85 min., screened in Beta SP Cheryl
Dunye's "saucy, daring, insidiously smart debut" (The Boston Phoenix)
stands as the first-ever theatrical feature directed by an African
American lesbian. The Watermelon Woman tells the story of Cheryl, played
engagingly by Dunye herself, who develops a fascination with 1930s
actress Fae Richards—a fictional character confined to playing "Mammy"
roles in movies by a Dorothy Azner-type director. As part of the
production, New York photographer Zoe Leonard shot cleverly constructed
still images of Fae Richards and in the process (re)invented a history
running counter to the invisibility of black women in early Hollywood
and black lesbians in general. The winner of the Teddy (the Berlinale)
and Outstanding Narrative Feature (Outfest) awards, The Watermelon Woman
also managed to raise the hackles of unreconstructed reactionary Jesse
Helms, who called the work "flotsam floating down a sewer." In person:
Cheryl Dunye Jack H. Skirball Series $9 [students $7]

PUBLIC IMAGE: ANNICE JACOBY'S 'STREET ART SAN FRANCISCO'
Presented as a slideshow, this book-release celebration of Street Art
San Francisco: Mission Muralismo, proudly represents the very Mission we
inhabit— politically and culturally. Edited by Annice Jacoby, with a
foreword by Carlos Santana, the photo book is a testimony to the
district as a laboratory of cultural activism—dressed and addressed by
the neighborhood as a public art site. This comprehensive volume honors
decades of sacred and profane urban iconography, showcasing the work of
artists from Spain Rodriguez to Shepard Fairey, Twist to Aaron Noble,
Rigo to Sara Thustra, Swoon to Susan Cervantes. Welcomed with free wine,
