Re: The 16mm Elmo Xenon Projector Question.

Wow. It's funny that I was just thinking last Saturday, as I drove down Seventh Street in San Francisco, that I was about due for my semi-annual posting about replacement belts for Eiki's (or Elmos or whatever).

I concur with Jeremy R. Check yr belts. These rubber things get old and dry and cracky and slippy and should totally be checked out. They might even have turned to melted goo in your projector (and note there are likely three or four belts, powering the fan etc, so dig around in there). And projector slowdown is classic crappy-old-belt result (thrift store super-8s are major culprits in that 40-minute meltdown you describe).

And now for the semi-annual where-to-find-'em:
In San Francisco there's a place called Bearing Agencies on Seventh between Howard and Folsom that sells rubber belts and gaskets of all sizes. They don't know projectors but they sure know belts——sometimes they ask "are you sealing or driving?" Bring yr old one in there and they'll lay another on you just like that. If the old one has gone bye-bye or converted into goo-state, bring in a loop of string you sized on the gears. The things are about a buck a piece; sometimes the guys are too lazy to ring it up; "pay me next time," they say.

I'm assuming that most large-ish cities have similar shops to this so probably no need to travel to SF for this. The deal is that it's *not* a projector/camera/movie shop but a gasket/belt/machine shop. Look in the phone book and call around.

(And... because this has also come up before, I know that there are some readers on this list who do not live in large-ish cities and/or are not near such shops. I acknowledge your presence and your needs but do not have a solution at this time.)

good luck!
