i don't want to scratch, nor remove/peel off , but rub off areas that has soft edges, give it some bite so then i can work on it

Soaking in hot or warm water will soften
up emulsion. It's quite different when warm, scratching is more like working
in wax than chipping the stone of hard dry emulsion. It's a gelatin,
right?
