I haven't seen Lovemaking, which makes it difficult to comment. But
my understanding is that in his considerations of notions of love and
sexuality, Stan ended up with a film in four sections: heterosexual
lovemaking, animals mating, homosexual lovemaking, and a fourth part
that was an unstaged filming of a group of children playing a game,
which Stan believed demonstrated some beginnings of sexual awareness
amongst the children -- and therefore seeming to him to be related
thematically to this film. Why he subsequently decided to withdraw it
was because of some reactions (I don't know the specifics) which led
him to believe that the film might be misunderstood or misused.
