region free and PAL/NTSC DVD

As a general rule cheaper DVD players are more flexible in terms of
being able to go region free and translate PAL discs into NTSC output
than the more expensive models from the big brand names like Sony,
Toshiba, Panasonic, etc. WalMart has a Phillips player for $44 that
will do just about anything: DVP3982.

To check on the capabilities of any given DVD player, look it up on www.videohelp.com
. There you will find, among other things, whether or not it can be
made region free with a remote control key sequence, and if so what
sequence should work. Models change often, and what's in the stores
right now may or may not have a full report, and may or may not do as
much as the commodity unit the big box store was selling last quarter.
If you find something that has the features you want and good user
ratings on videohelp, but it's no longer in stores, look for one
'new' (unopened) on eBay.
