It has to happen, a serious engagement of the intersection between performance
and film, one that is not restricted to "expanded cinema" or the combined uses
of live art and projected media. It has to happen, an extension of the
discussion surrounding Abramovic (see recent articles and interviews in
Afterimage and Artforum), an engagement by film artists with controversies
addressing the documentation, meaning, and restaging of performance art, the
uses of film by artists engaging in live events, not just in the West, but in
the East Block and elsewhere (see the book Body and the East, which lists films
by artists producing live events), a conversation about film and video as media
in the service of performance within a history of performance art, an art that
has always had documentation at its disposal.

Subject: [Frameworks] Expanded Cinema Event in November
Just wanted to forward this onto those who might have interest:
A friendly notice to let you know that Mono No Aware IV has announced its CALL
FOR ENTRIES.
We are looking for film works which incorporate live additional elements,
deadline is November 5th 2010.
No entry fee.
Information on how to enter your work can be found here along with images from
last years event.
Brief description below. Feel free to forward this message onto those you know
who might have interest in cinema/performance.
MONO NO AWARE IS AN INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF EXPANDED CINEMA PERFORMANCES.
TAKING IT'S NAME FROM MOTOORI NORINAGA’S EXPRESSION MEANING "THE PATHOS OF
THINGS". THE CONCEPT IS TO PRESENT WORK WHICH IS EPHEMERAL IN NATURE WITH AN
EMPHASIS ON THE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE. ALL OF PRESENTED WORK CONSISTS OF ONE PART
FILM PROJECTION AND ONE PART LIVE PERFORMANCE ELEMENT. MONO NO AWARE IS OPEN TO
ANY PERSON OR GROUP OF ARTISTS / MUSICIANS / PERSONS MAKING WORK ON 16MM OR
SUPER 8MM FILM WHICH INCORPORATES LIVE PERFORMANCE OR VICE VERSA. NO DIGITAL
VIDEO.
ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY HAVE ALTERED THE AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE AND CONNECTIVITY
ASSOCIATED WITH THE CINEMA. WEBSITES, TELEVISION, AND EVEN CELL PHONES HAVE
BECOME AN EVERYDAY VEHICLE FOR FILM AND VIDEO. WE BELIEVE THERE IS A MAGIC IN
SEEING THE FILM PRINT. THERE IS A PRESENCE A POET HAS READING HIS/HER OWN
WRITING. THERE IS A FEELING THAT RESONATES IN YOUR CHEST WHEN YOU SEE A
MUSICIAN PERFORM LIVE. IN THE SPIRIT OF THE FESTIVAL WE ASK THAT THE ARTISTS
NOT MAKE VIDEO COPIES OF THE PERFORMANCE. EACH MONO NO AWARE PERFORMANCE IS ONE
OF A KIND, SOME PARTICIPANTS HAVE GONE SO FAR AS TO DESTROY THE FILM WORK AFTER
ITS FIRST RUN AT THE EVENT.
The event will take place on Sunday November 28th 2010, 5PM @ Lumenhouse in
Brooklyn, NY. There is no cover charge.
This year we will be offering workshops in film-making starting in August.
Images from previous years, past programs, participants, & more information can
be found at our website: WWW.MONONOAWAREFILM.COM
Thank you for your time, we hope to see you in November.
