Clarification here on "Tongues Untied" --

This film was not "created specifically" for POV. It was funded by a
few small grants including one of then NEA Regional Fellowship
Program grants. Obviously, POV paid a broadcast license fee after
the fact, but by then the film had been playing in festivals and
conferences domestically and internationally.
        The NEA Regional Fellowship money caused right-wing backlash against
the US government funding artists at all. Several other films were
attacked at the same time, creating what became known as the
"culture wars."
