If I recall correctly, in Scott MacDonald's excellent book on Canyon Cinema
(I don't have it with me right now) he talks about how the Brakhage DVDs led
to a sharp decline in rentals and a serious financial crisis that almost
caused Canyon to go under. I remember something about an anonymous donation
helping them stay afloat. I'm not sure it's fair to say that something like
Ubu can't hurt rentals, or threaten the long-term viability of the Coops.
And to some extent you have to consider the quality of the available video.
Some of the videos they have up look really, really awful.
