Not true! Belson was paid for his work on The Right Stuff and paid well: "I imagine everybody connected with the film made a lot of money. I made more money than I'd ever made in my life--eventually, a thousand dollars a week, and those weeks would go by so fast that I almost didn't have time to cash the checks! For me, making the money was one of the most exciting parts of the whole experience..." Belson in A Critical Cinema 3: p. 83--he talks at some length about his work on The Right Stuff in this interview.
