Screening: Aug. 18-19

Deadline: July 21

The Bearded Child is a small vanguard festival devoted to “outsider” film and performance art. All genres are eligible, but we are mostly interested in works that push innovative boundaries in one way or another. Weird and wacky works are our first priority, but it tends to be difficult to get the real crazies to submit to festivals. If you know of any reclusive artists that might fit in well with this festival, please let us know.

This year we are relying solely on free-will donations to fund the festival, and no mandatory entry fee is required. Your potential donation will directly affect the quality of the festival itself, but will have no impact on our selection process. As “donations” tend to be somewhat flaky, no awards will be given at this year’s festival, and we expect a very bare-bones operating budget.

The festival is held in a gorgeous 600-seat performing arts center deep in the heart of the Northwoods. Grand Rapids, Minnesota (NOT Michigan!!) is a small mill town of just under 8000 people. It boasts several of the finest thrift stores, greasy-spoon diners, and early morning bakeries in the Midwest. The perfect location for a true “outsider” fest!

If selected for the festival, you may also be eligible for future Bearded Child film tours. In Fall 2005, the Bearded Child went on a whirlwind 30+ city tour that hit locations as diverse as: Clovis, NM; Harrison, Ark.; Kirksville, MO; Ashville, NC; Jacksonville, FL; Memphis, TN; Detroit, MI; Oakland, CA; Burning Man Festival, NV; Montreal, and more.
