Netflix and filmmaker royalties

Anyone know if--aside from their exclusive distribution
deals--Netflix pays royalties to filmmakers whose work they rent out?
Or is this the sole terrain of the distributor from whom Netflix
acquires the DVDs? Does anyone know about the nature of these
arrangements?
