Just thought I'd chime in to say that Marker has
historically not liked the subtitling of his work into
English as much as the re-recording of the narration
into English, and has often supervised the English
versions himself. I don't believe he did with La
Jetee, but as someone already mentioned, I've heard he
likes the English version just fine.
Marker's English is apparently excellent, and since
he's in a position linguistically and creatively to
make sure the films are translated properly into
dubbed versions, I've never questioned the legitimacy
of it. Sans Soleil in particular is excellent in
English, and his recent reworking of Le Fond de l'air
est rouge into a shorter English version called A Grin
Without a Cat seemed pretty successful to me too.
