ESSENTIAL CINEMA: JONAS MEKAS
REMINISCENCES OF A JOURNEY TO LITHUANIA 971-72, 82 minutes. "The film
consists of four parts. The first part contains some footage from my
first years in America, 1949-52. The second part was shot in August 1971
in Lithuania. The third part is in Elmshorn, near Hamburg, where I spent
eight months in a forced labor camp. The fourth part is in Vienna (1971)
with Peter Kubelka, Nitsch, Annette Michelson, Ken Jacobs, etc. The film
deals with home, memory, and culture." – J.M.

PERSONAL ARCHIVE: TRAVIS MILES
PERSONAL ARCHIVE usually involves asking a guest curator to make a
mixtape of odds and ends from their extensive and mysterious video
holdings, but this time we kept it in the family. We're sad to see our
highly valued and soon-to-be-missed Publicist and Programmer Travis
Miles moving to LA, but happy that he and his wife, Justine, will
finally be able to surf more. It is their true calling. If the amazingly
great series and shows that Travis has contributed to our calendar since
he joined us in 2002 are any indication, tonight's show should be
stunning. Expect a small peak into his deep and cheap collection of
ceaseless wonders with a round-the-globe trip through cinema and the
great audio-visual beyond. Abhorrers of Eric Stoltz, lovers of Johnny To
& Wai Ka Fai, fans of Thor, God of Rock, those frightened by Clarabelle
the Clown, and admirers of anthropomorphic food should have at least 10%
more fun than they would usually.

FILMS OF HARRY SMITH
Harry Smith was an artist, filmmaker, anthropologist, musicologist and
collector whose life and work made him an important figure in the
American avant-garde. Early Abstractions USA/23mins/1951 An
extraordinary panorama of abstract animation. Heaven and Earth Magic
USA/67mins/1961 Smith worked on this experimental film throughout most
of the fifties. It was originally at least six hours long. Simple
cut-out pictures of objects and figures perform together in a plot
directed by Smith's interpretation of the surrealist principle of
'psychic automatism'. "An awful logic seemingly governs all the events."
David Curtis "I was blown away. The animation is mind boggling and the
use of sound is unforgettable." imdb.com Late Superimpositions
USA/27mins/1960 An extraordinary display of unedited and randomly
associated images taken from everyday life and superimposed in the
camera. With a randomly associated soundtrack of German opera and
cabaret songs.

offbeat, hilarious and dark animated tale about an evil little boy named
Fred set to a song by the Tiger Lillies. German physician and writer
Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894) wrote this didactic tale that was meant to
scare children when they behaved badly. The British band, The Tiger
Lillies, put this and other Hoffmann stories to music. Helen Quinn was
so inspired by the song that she drew corresponding images with gouache
and filmed them frame by frame with a Super 8 camera. Food Chain Ianthe

A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture An hour-long
documentary Directed by Byron Hurt Co-Produced and edited by Sabrina
Schmidt Gordon BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in On
Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture, is a riveting documentary that examines
representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the
lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback turned
activist. Conceived as a "loving critique" from a self-proclaimed
"Hip-Hop Head," Hurt tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and
homophobia in today's hip-hop culture. BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES features
revealing interviews with famous rappers including Mos Def, Fat Joe,
Chuck D, Jadakiss and Busta Rhymes and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons;
along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall,
Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman
College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading
liberal arts institutions. BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES also reveals the
complex intersection of culture, commerce and gender through
on-the-street interviews with aspiring rappers and fans at hip-hop
events throughout the country. The film provides thoughtful dialogue
from intelligent, divergent voices of rap artists, industry executives,
rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop
generation.
