I don't think this is the film you're looking for--it's earlier than 60s/70s
(early 1950s) and the plot's quite different to my recollection, but your
description reminded of Mizoguchi's UGETSU, which is indeed both Japanese
and a ghost story (and the main female ghost is pretty 'witchie' so it may
be of interest for the audio project too). Really good and creepy.
