THE VIDEO DATA BANK CELEBRATES 30 YEARS! ANNE MCGUIRE: VIDEOS
Anne McGuire in person! In celebration of the Video Data Bank's
30-year-anniversary, CATE hosts a double-feature of sorts with video
artist Anne McGuire and underground legend George Kuchar. Anne McGuire
is a San Francisco-based video artist whose "private cabarets" expose
the formal elements of another era's media mannerisms and lay bare their
cultural mores. Her works contain elements of impersonation and
performance, personal exorcism and autobiography, wit and media
critique. A survey of her short works to date, tonight's program
includes ALL SMILES AND SADNESS (1999, 7 min.) starring George Kuchar, I
   AM CRAZY AND YOU'RE NOT WRONG (1997, 11 min.), JOE DIMAGGIO 1, 2, 3
(1991, 7 min.), and TURN TABLE (2005, 4 min.), among others.
Co-presented by the Video Data Bank and CATE. (1991-2006, USA/Taiwan,
   BetaSP video, ca. 90 min.)

THE VIDEO DATA BANK CELEBRATES 30 YEARS! THE WORLD OF GEORGE KUCHAR
George Kuchar in person! In celebration of the Video Data Bank's
30-year-anniversary, CATE hosts a double-feature of sorts with
underground legend George Kuchar and video artist Anne McGuire. George
Kuchar has been working with the moving image for nearly half a century.
First, with his twin brother Mike, producing their ultra-low-budget
underground versions of Hollywood genre films. And then, on his own,
since the 1980s, creating brilliantly edited, hilarious, often diaristic
tapes with dime-store props and not-so-special effects, using friends as
actors, and the "pageant that is life" for his studio. Tonight he will
present a selection of his high-ambition, low-neckline genre tapes and
autobiographic chronicles, coinciding with the launch of a special Video
Data Bank DVD compilation, The World of George Kuchar. The program
includes the weather–imbued HEAVENLY FEATURES (2005, 10 min.), the
people, pets and places of FAULTY FATHOMS (2006, 15 min.), and the world
premiere of his latest opus TEMPLE OF TORMENT (2006, 18 min.), among
others. Co-presented by the Video Data Bank and CATE. (1991-2006,
USA/Taiwan, BetaSP video, ca. 90 min.)

TEN SHORT FILMS BY VITTORIO DE SETA
Before directing his first feature, Bandits of Orgosolo, Vittorio De
Seta made a series of remarkable independent short documentaries
depicting life and events in Sardinia and his native Sicily in the 50s,
films now preserved in the Cineteca di Bologna. "When I.. screened
(these documentaries)," wrote Martin Scorsese, "I was stunned... It was
almost as if I had entered the screen and I was there... I was entering
the eye of the filmmaker... Here was cinema in its essence... cinema at
its best, a cinema that had the power to transform."

30 YEARS OF THE VIDEO DATA BANK: GENE YOUNGBLOOD: SECESSION FROM THE
  BROADCAST
Gene Youngblood is an internationally recognized theorist of media arts
and politics and a respected scholar of the history and theory of
alternative cinemas. His Expanded Cinema (1970), the first book to
consider video as an art form, was influential in establishing the field
of media arts. Continuing to explore the impact of new technologies,
Youngblood will discuss the social, political, and artistic dimensions
of the convergence of moving-image practice, DVD distribution, and the
Internet--a radical and fully democratic new media environment that
exceeds the wildest utopian dreams of the last 35 years and for the
first time allows us to permanently escape the corporate media culture.

  TASTE OF ICELAND FILM FESTIVAL
One night only! 7pm — Portrait of an Island: How Do You Like Iceland?
and other related shorts How Do You Like Iceland? Dir: Kristin
Ólafsdóttir \ 2005 \ Beta SP \ 67 min The proverbial question all
visitors to Iceland are undoubtedly asked, How Do You Like Iceland?
takes a charmingly informative look at the quirks and wonders of the
Icelandic nation and its people. The documentary features interviews
with a host of foreigners familiar with the ways and means of this small
country, including Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, the heads of Fat
Cat Records, Monty Python trouper Terry Jones, and others. Peppered
throughout the film are fascinating and irreverent tidbits about
Icelandic culture; amongst them is the fact that Icelanders hold world
records in credit card spending, Cocoa Puffs consumption, and Internet
usage. An entertaining must-see for Iceland enthusiasts. The Last Farm
   Dir: Rúnar Rúnarsson \ 2004 \ 35mm \ 15 mins The setting in this
Oscar-nominated short is a remote valley, in which all the farms except
one have been abandoned. An elderly man keeps a secret from the outside
world as he reacts to the possibility that he will no longer be able to
remain on his isolated farm Landslag Dir: Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson \
2004 \ video \ 4 mins A visual nature poem consisting of images taken
from the Skagafjördur region of Iceland. 9pm – Cold Hearts: Icelandic
Artist Films and Music Videos [TRT/90mins] Featuring macabre stop
animation, the secret life of moss, mouse suits, exploding dictaphones,
women who live on clouds, Outkast ballads, and some very creative uses
for whipped cream, Cold Hearts represents the whimsical Icelandic
imagination. 17 artist films and music videos cover expansive aesthetic
ground. Working in locales as diverse as art school in Los Angeles to
the craggy vistas of Skagafjördur in northern Iceland, these young
artists explore their native and adopted worlds in inventive ways.
Intrinsically dark and aloof, yet also refreshingly honest, Cold Hearts
is a glimpse into the curious cultural landscape of Iceland now. From
the fantastical, sometimes disturbing artist films of Unnar Andrea
Einarsdottir to the otherworldly output created by bands such as Mum and
Apparat Organ Quartet, the Icelandic aesthetic is as strange and
   beautiful as it is overlooked.
