SUMATRAN FOLK CINEMA + MOROCCO: MUSICAL BROTHERHOODS
Alan Bishop and Mark Gergis introduce two of the newer titles in the
Sublime Frequencies catalogue, a refreshing hybrid of ethnography,
travelogue, and field recordings, made possible with lightweight cameras
and increased access to indigenous cultures. The hr-long Sumatran
collage constitutes a cultural kaleidoscope of the sounds and images
from that Indonesian island. Minang orchestras, Dangdut rock music,
regional television, and night market scenes share space with a segment
of pre-tsunami Bandah Aceh, recorded by David Martinez. Hisham Mayet's
hr.-long Morocco: Musical Brotherhoods from the Trans-Saharan Highway
affords an assortment of musical dramas, live and unfiltered, on the
home turf of the world's most dynamic string/drum specialists…ecstatic
performances for string aficionados of electric ouds, banjos, mandolins,
and the gnawa sentir. Come early, meet the makers, and immerse yourself
in a sumptuous, transporting music and food mix.

by Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi Presented in Association
with SF Camerawork Lauded at Cannes, the finale of Yervant Gianikian and
Angela Ricci Lucchi's World War One trilogy examines the effect of
warfare on the human body. Oh, Uomo! (Oh, Man!) is the fruit of the
artists' extensive research in historical and medical film archives.
While the visceral images of shattered but living bodies, as well
science's attempts to repair and document them, orginate in the
aftermath of the first "modern" war, they speak clamorously about the
wars being waged with even more technological ferocity today. With
Transparencies, a peek at more mutilated cinematic treasures.

TASTE OF ICELAND FILM FESTIVAL
One night only! 7pm — Portrait of an Island: How Do You Like Iceland?
and other related shorts How Do You Like Iceland? Dir: Kristin
Ólafsdóttir \ 2005 \ Beta SP \ 67 min The proverbial question all
visitors to Iceland are undoubtedly asked, How Do You Like Iceland?
takes a charmingly informative look at the quirks and wonders of the
Icelandic nation and its people. The documentary features interviews
with a host of foreigners familiar with the ways and means of this small
country, including Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz, the heads of Fat
Cat Records, Monty Python trouper Terry Jones, and others. Peppered
throughout the film are fascinating and irreverent tidbits about
Icelandic culture; amongst them is the fact that Icelanders hold world
records in credit card spending, Cocoa Puffs consumption, and Internet
usage. An entertaining must-see for Iceland enthusiasts. The Last Farm
Dir: Rúnar Rúnarsson \ 2004 \ 35mm \ 15 mins The setting in this
Oscar-nominated short is a remote valley, in which all the farms except
one have been abandoned. An elderly man keeps a secret from the outside
world as he reacts to the possibility that he will no longer be able to
remain on his isolated farm Landslag Dir: Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson \
2004 \ video \ 4 mins A visual nature poem consisting of images taken
from the Skagafjördur region of Iceland. 9pm – Cold Hearts: Icelandic
Artist Films and Music Videos [TRT/90mins] Featuring macabre stop
animation, the secret life of moss, mouse suits, exploding dictaphones,
women who live on clouds, Outkast ballads, and some very creative uses
for whipped cream, Cold Hearts represents the whimsical Icelandic
imagination. 17 artist films and music videos cover expansive aesthetic
ground. Working in locales as diverse as art school in Los Angeles to
the craggy vistas of Skagafjördur in northern Iceland, these young
artists explore their native and adopted worlds in inventive ways.
Intrinsically dark and aloof, yet also refreshingly honest, Cold Hearts
is a glimpse into the curious cultural landscape of Iceland now. From
the fantastical, sometimes disturbing artist films of Unnar Andrea
Einarsdottir to the otherworldly output created by bands such as Mum and
Apparat Organ Quartet, the Icelandic aesthetic is as strange and
beautiful as it is overlooked.

PETER TODD. WORKS ON 16MM FILM 1990 - 2005.
"Continuing in the vein of his earlier For You, Todd here [An Office
Worker Thinks of Their Love, and Home] develops that work's silent
observation and meditation on the local, the environmentally familiar,
within the frame of an archetypal routine and with his trademark
white-pad texts signalling the pivotal sentiments anchoring the piece.
The journey revealed is deceptively simple, charting the movement from
the film-maker's garden to his city centre office employment and then
back, via the underground and a written declaration of emotional
attentions, to his evening house. A description such as the one offered
does nothing, however, to convey the richness of this passage as Todd
presents it. One's own mundane circuit is often so internalised, that it
takes the visualisation of another's (or indeed its written analysis;
think of novelist Nicholson Baker's precise prose epiphanies of the
everyday) to let us see our own afresh. To be benignly jolted, calmly
encouraged to reconsider the possible immanence of awe, is one of the
recurrent effects of Todd's work in this vein." Gareth Evans - Vertigo.
Peter Todd is a Bristol born artist film maker working in particular
with 16mm film and curated programmes (Film Poems 1-4, Garden Pieces).

OH! UOMO
Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi (Italy, 2004) For over twenty
years, Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi have assembled haunting films from
footage that they painstakingly collect from archives, then slow and
tint to underline or analyze its content. Oh! Uomo , the final part of
their trilogy on the Great War, is perhaps the most graphic and
disturbing of their films; it is also among the most powerful. In
footage shot primarily by medical personnel in the years immediately
following the war, we see destitute children, soldiers' bodies being
reassembled, their faces reconstructed—the human body and psyche
devastatingly altered by modern warfare. Richard Brody in The New Yorker
labeled Oh! Uomo "nothing less than a horror documentary." It is one
that raises profound questions about the role of images in bearing
witness to the brutality of war . . . then and now.

CINEMA PROJECT PRESENTS -- ICI ET AILLEURS
Cinema Project Presents. Ici et Ailleurs (Here and Elsewhere) [1974,
16mm, 55m, sound, color] Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Mieville.
November 7th & 8th 2006 7:30pm 922 SE Ankeny / New American Art Union
#503-232-8269 www.cinemaproject.org In the late 60's and early 70's
Godard began working as part of the DzigaVertov Group, with Jean-Pierre
Gorin among others, making what are considered to be some of the first
agit-prop films. The group was commissioned in 1970 by Palestine to
create a film about a Palestinian family titled Until Victory; but after
their defeat in the Six Day War, the project was dropped. Ici et
Ailleurs (Here and Elsewhere) is a collaboration between Godard and
Anne-Marie Mieville, which expanded the original idea to encompass both
a French and a Palestinian family, delving into the cultural differences
of these two places as well as exploring how differently they are viewed
and captured by the media. Using layering of film and video, fragments
from television, photographs, literature, and projected film, this film
begs us, as viewers, to question how we are seeing.

ELIZABETH KNIPE- IN-PERSON
ELIZABETH KNIPE (Buffalo, NY) - Tonight's program (all shot on mini-DV)
will include: Narcissus (2003, 5 mins); pop your own (2004, 3 mins);
Buffalo Walk 2005 (2005, 12 mins); landlocked (2006, 11 mins); does this
make me an artist? (2006, 2 mins); BSE PSA (2006, 5 mins); and Les Baux
(in progress) (2006, 4 mins) and other works. "Much of my work is drawn
out of the experience of growing up on a farm in a small town. The
scenery of my childhood is peppered throughout the imagery in my writing
and inspires the colors in my videos. Most often the content or plot
acts as a reconciliation between my rural youth and urban adulthood,
between the family I was born with and the family I have created. The
tension between these dichotomies and the resulting insecurities are
always present at some level." Depending on "who I meet and how I feel"
Knipe describes herself as "a digital poet, an experimental video maker,
a performer and a researcher of interactivity and haptic video." -LK
