Cleaning a film with a film cleaner, and airing the print,
will in many cases reduce or even seem to alleviate a film's VS odor. This
doesn't necessarily profess a cure...for if the print is again tightly
canned the VS smell will occur again. I like to clean the VS print and let
it air out of can for up to 6 months. This will slow the deterioration
process. Storage in vented archival cans should follow this procedure.
VS prints should be segregated from "healthy" prints.

Subject: vinegar syndrome

Hello Frameworkers --

I'm in the process of cleaning and organizing all the 16mm student films in
the archive here at the University of Iowa and I was wondering if anyone
knew of ways one could slow the vinegar syndrome? Are there cleaners out
there that work? Are there special ways to store the film that slow the
process?

Thanks, guys!

Yay for film!!!
