A last minute reminder that Cinema Project will be presenting an outdoor, rooftop screening of James Benning's amazing film, RR. So grab a blanket, a raincoat possibly, and join us. Details below. In the unfortunate event that it is raining heavily, we will move inside to our black box cinema.Much love,Cinema Project

pirate movie.”
- James Benning
Cinema Project is excited to present the work of James Benning.
Working exclusively in 16mm since the mid 1970s, Benning often takes as subject the
diverse landscapes of the US through the patient lens of a true cinematographer.
Shot on 16mm along numerous stretches of US landscape, his latest work, RR, is a
winding strand of 43 singles-takes of trains; chugging up and down tracks and in and
out of frame. As much about the movement of trains as the landscapes they traverse,
each shot is signaled by a mixed moment of anticipation and meditation: waiting for
the train’s arrival as the sound from collected field recordings create a “dense
collage of ambient effects.”
The train-watching experience itself has harmonized with cinema since its
beginnings, but never as fully as it does here. Stopping to watch a train go by, to
remove oneself from the constraints of planned and coordinated time as well as
perceptual constancy, is indeed to ‘cede authority’—it’s one of the rare moments
when we give ourselves over to purely poetic time.
