If memory serves, according to the liner notes when Sistiaga's film was
screened in SF a few years ago that's *exactly* what he did: painted it
with the understanding that what came from his hand was "compressed" and
would be stretched out in projection (he also painted *the whole
surface* -- see strip image on SFC site here:

page). When you're watching it you certainly think at some points "Wow
looka all flat ovoids!"
Interesting that the little clip Jorge pointed to is *not* stretched.
And tagging on to last burst of emails: it was shown silent.
